SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Naturally Caron Spa yarn: 9 (12, 15) oz (Shown in Rose Bisque)
  • Knitting needles sizes US 6 and 7 (4 and 4.5 mm), or size to obtain gauge
  • 3/4" Buttons: (3, 4)
  • Yarn needle

SIZES: Toddler 2 (3–4, 5–6)
Measurements - Chest 24" (26", 28") Length 13" (15", 17-1/2")

GAUGE: In Stockinette stitch, 20 sts and 24 rows = 4"/10 cm

ABBREVIATIONS:

TL (Twist 2-left): Skip first st on LH needle, knit in back of second st, knit first st and slip both sts from LH needle.

TR (Twist 2-right): Skip first st on LH needle, knit in front of second st, knit first st, slip both sts from LH needle.

STITCHES:

Garter stitch (Garter st)
Stockinette stitch (St st)

DIRECTIONS:

SMOCK PATTERN (multiple of 4 sts + 2)

Row 1 (RS): K1, *k1, p2, k1; rep from * across, end k1.
Row 2: P1, *p1, k2, p1; repeat from * across, end p1.
Row 3: K1, *TL, TR; rep from * across, end k1.
Row 4: P1, *k1, p2, k1; rep from * across, end p1.
Row 5: K1, p1, *TR, p2; rep from * across, end TR, p1, k1.
Row 6: P1, *k1, p2, k1; rep from * across, end p1.
Row 7: K1, *TR, TL; rep from * across, end p1.
Rows 8, 10 and 12: *P2, k2; rep from * across, end p2.
Rows 9, 11 and 13: *K2, p2; rep from * across, end k2.
Row 14: Rep Row 8.
Rep Rows 1 -- 14 for Smock patt.

BACK:

Using smaller needles, CO 90 (98, 106) sts. Knit 4 rows.
Change to larger needles; work even in St st until piece meas 7 1/2 (9, 11)" from beg, dec 32 (36, 40) sts evenly across last (WS) row – 58 (62, 66) sts rem.
Beg Smock patt; work until piece meas 8 1/2 (10, 12)" from beg, end WS row.
Shape Armholes: Cont in patt, BO 4 (4, 4) sts at beg of next 2 rows – 50 (54, 58) sts rem.
Work even until armhole meas 4 1/2 (5, 51/2)", end WS row. BO loosely.

LEFT FRONT:

Using smaller needles, CO 44 (48, 52) sts. Knit 4 rows. Change to larger needles; work even in St st until piece meas 7-1/2 (9, 11)" from beg, dec 14 (14, 14) sts evenly across last (WS) row – 30 (34, 38) sts rem. Begin Smock patt; work until piece meas 8 1/2 (10, 12)" from beg, end WS row. Shape Armhole: Cont in patt, BO 4 (4, 4) sts at armhole edge once – 26 (30, 34) sts rem. Work until armhole meas 2 1/2 (3, 3)" from beg, end RS row. Shape Neck: (WS) BO 6 (7, 8) sts, work to end – 20 (23, 26) sts rem. At neck edge, dec 1 st EOR 5 (5, 5) times – 15 (18, 21) sts rem. Work even until armhole meas same as Back to shoulder. BO loosely.

RIGHT FRONT:

Work as Left Front, reversing all shaping.

SLEEVES:

Using smaller needles, CO 34 (34, 36) sts. Knit 4 rows. Change to larger needles; work even in St st until piece meas 2" from beg, end WS row. Inc 1 st each side of next (RS) row, then every 6 rows 4 (5, 6) times—44 (46, 50) sts. Work even until piece meas 7 (9, 11)" from beg, end WS row. Shape Cap: Cont in St st, BO 4 (4, 4) sts at beg of next 2 rows—36 (38, 42) sts rem. Dec 1 st each side of next (RS) row, then EOR 6 (7, 7) times—22 (22, 26) sts rem. Next row (RS): K1, k2tog across, end k1—12 (12, 14) sts rem. Purl next row.
Next row (RS): K2tog across. BO purlwise.

FINISHING:

Block pieces to measurements. Sew shoulder seams. Set in sleeves; sew sleeve and side seams.
Button Band: With RS facing, using smaller needles, pick up and knit 58 (66, 74) sts along left Front edge.
Knit 3 rows.
Work in k2, p2 rib for 4 rows. Knit 3 rows. BO knitwise.
Buttonhole Band: Place markers for 3 (3, 4) buttonholes on right Front edge along Smocked section, first 1/2" from neck edge. Work first 5 rows as for Button band. Next row: *Work in patt to marker, k2tog, yo; rep from * for rem buttonholes, work in patt to end. Complete as for Button band. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.
Collar: With RS facing, using smaller needles, pick up and knit 52 (56, 60) sts around neck edge.
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: K3, purl across to last 3 sts, k3. Rep Rows 1 and 2 a total of 3 (4, 5) times. Next row: Knit, inc 10 (10 12) sts evenly across. Using larger needles, BO knitwise. Using yarn needle, weave in ends.
