    • With A, cast on 86 (92, 100, 106, 114) sts.
    • Knit 3 rows.
    • Beginning with a RS (knit) row work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures about 7" (18 cm) from beg, end with a WS row as the last row worked.
    • Change to B.
    • With B, work in St st until piece measures about 14" (25.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row as the last row worked.
    • Change to C.
    • With C, work in St st until piece measures about 21" (53.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row as the last row worked.

    • Shape Shoulders
    • Continue in St st, and AT THE SAME TIME, shape shoulders as follows:
    • Bind off 3 sts at the beg of the next 20 (16, 8, 4, 0) rows and 4 sts at the beg of the next 0 (4, 12, 16, 20) rows – there will be 26 (28, 28, 30, 34) sts when all bind offs are complete. Slip these 26 (28, 28, 30, 34) sts onto a holder.

    • FRONT
    • Note: Before beginning the Front, divide yarns C and D into 2 balls each if necessary.
    • Cast on and work same as for Back until piece measures about 16 in. (40.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row as the last row worked.
    • Place a marker on each side of the center 8 sts.
    • Continuing color changes as for Back, work as follows:
    • Next Row (RS): Knit across, slipping markers as you come to them.
    • Next Row (WS): Purl to first marker, slip marker (sm), k to next marker, sm, purl to end of row.
    • Rep last 2 rows 2 more times.

    • Divide for Front Slit
    • Next Row (RS): Continuing in St st, k to first marker, sm, k4; join a 2nd ball of yarn and k to next marker, sm, k to end of row - 43 (46, 50, 53, 57) sts remain on each side.

    • Working both sides AT THE SAME TIME with separate balls of yarn, rep last 2 rows until Front measures same as Back to shoulder shaping, end with a WS row as the last row you work.

    • Shape Shoulders and Neck
    • Working each side separately, continue in St st and AT THE SAME TIME, shape shoulders and neck as follows:
    • Bind off at each shoulder edge 3 sts 10 (8, 4, 2, 0) times and 4 sts 0 (2, 6, 8, 10) times and AT THE SAME TIME bind off at each neck edge 5 (6, 6, 7, 9) sts once, 3 sts once, 2 sts once and 1 st three times.
