Rated 3 out of 5 by from Get just the mat You def need the mat in order to use this tool, and then it will pierce easily through cardstock, patterned paper etc. However, it is hard to keep the lines straight or if you are trying to pierce through more than 1 sheet of paper at a time. The foam mat by itself is great though for quick hand piercing, so I'd prob recommend getting the mat itself and a simple paper piercer to anyone looking to start sewing into their scrapbooks or cards.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not what expected I recently purchased this tool as well as another attachment head hoping to easily add stitching to my paper. This does NOT pierce through paper, vellum, or cardstock by itself. I am thinking you have to purchase the special mat since it does not work at all without it (even using a different self-healing cutting mat, card stock, or cardboard underneath). Plus, I think I broke the little piercing pieces trying to cut through the different materials.
