SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Lion Brand® HOMESPUN®:
    • Barley 1 skein
    • or color of choice
  • Lion Brand®:
    • Knitting needles size 10
    • Large-eyed blunt needle
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure

SIZE:

Finished circumference: about 17”, unstretched. Hat will stretch to fit a range of sizes

GAUGE:

16 stitches + 20 rows = about 4” in Knit 2, purl 2 Rib, unstretched.
BE SURE TO CHECK GAUGE.

DIRECTIONS:

PATTERN STITCH
Knit 2, purl 2 Rib (multiple of 4 stitches)
Row 1: *Knit 2, purl 2; repeat from * to end of row.
Row 2: Knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches.
Repeat Row 2 for knit 2, purl 2 Rib.

NOTES:

1. Hat is worked flat and then seamed.
2. When there is "– 12 stitches" in the instructions, this tells how many stitches to have at the end of that specific row.

HAT
Cast on 68 stitches.
Work in Knit 2, purl 2 Rib until piece measures about 7 in. (18 cm) from beginning.
Decrease Row: *Knit 2, purl 2 together; repeat from * to end of row – 51 stitches at the end of this row.
Rib Row 1: *Knit 1, purl 2; repeat from * to end of row.
Rib Row 2: *Knit 2, purl 1; repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat last 2 rows until piece measures about 10” from beginning, end with a Rib Row 1 as your last row.
Shape Crown (Top of Hat)
Decrease Row: *Knit 1, knit 2 together; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, knit 2 – 34 stitches.
Beginning with a purl row, work in Stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) for 5 rows.
Decrease Row: *Knit 2 together; repeat from * to end of row – 17 stitches.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail into blunt needle and then through remaining stiches. Pull to gather. Knot securely, then use yarn tail to seam Hat.

FINISHING:

Weave in ends.
