Knit 2, purl 2 Rib (multiple of 4 stitches)
Row 1: *Knit 2, purl 2; repeat from * to end of row.
Row 2: Knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches.
Repeat Row 2 for knit 2, purl 2 Rib.

Cast on 68 stitches.
Work in Knit 2, purl 2 Rib until piece measures about 7 in. (18 cm) from beginning.
Decrease Row: *Knit 2, purl 2 together; repeat from * to end of row – 51 stitches at the end of this row.
Rib Row 1: *Knit 1, purl 2; repeat from * to end of row.
Rib Row 2: *Knit 2, purl 1; repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat last 2 rows until piece measures about 10” from beginning, end with a Rib Row 1 as your last row.
Shape Crown (Top of Hat)
Decrease Row: *Knit 1, knit 2 together; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, knit 2 – 34 stitches.
Beginning with a purl row, work in Stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) for 5 rows.
Decrease Row: *Knit 2 together; repeat from * to end of row – 17 stitches.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail into blunt needle and then through remaining stiches. Pull to gather. Knot securely, then use yarn tail to seam Hat.
Weave in ends.
