Owl Dress & Bag - Cutting Chart
Fold the Paisley Pop Owls dress front in half so short edges meet. (Folded piece should measure 13”x19”.) Measure in 3” from the cut edge and down 4 ½”; mark and cut along drawn lines (Dia. A). Repeat for dress back.
Pin the dress front and back RST and sew sides; press seams open.
Fold armhole binding in half WST so long edges meet; press. Open, then fold one long edge in 1/4”; press. Pin the right side of binding (flat edge) to the wrong side of the dress armhole edge; sew using a 1/4” seam and cut off any excess binding. Turn the pressed edge to the right side of the dress; pin and topstitch. Repeat for the other armhole.
DRESS BOTTOM RUFFLE:
Sew the three Chevron 3”x32” rectangles (bottom ruffle) together at the short ends using a 1/4” seam; press seams open. Turn the bottom edge of the ruffle under 1/4”; press. To hem, turn under again 1/4”; press and topstitch. Sew a long basting stitch 1/8” from the cut edge and again at 1/4” for gathering. Pin to bottom edge of dress wrong sides together adjusting gathers to fit; sew using a 1/4” seam and press seam toward dress.
Sew the short ends of the three Turquoise Tonal 1-1/4”x18” rectangles (dress band) together using a 1/4” seam; press seams open. Fold the band in half WST so long edges meet; open and press each long edge in ¼”and one short end under 1/2”. Center the crease and pin the band over the ruffle seam placing the raw end under the folded end; sew close to the edge along both sides.
Press the two short ends of a Chevron 3-1/2”x21” rectangle under 1/4”, then turn under again 1/4” to the finish the edge; sew close to edge. Repeat for one long edge.
Pin right side of ruffle to wrong side of top edge of dress front. Starting at 1-1/4” from end of ruffle, sew a 1/4” seam and stop sewing at 1-1/4” from end of ruffle (Dia. B).
Turn ruffle to front and topstitch close to edge; sew again at 3/4” to form a casing for elastic to be inserted later (Dia. C). Note: ruffle ends are not sewn down. Repeat for second ruffle on back of dress.
To shape shoulder ruffle, fold Chevron 5”x16” rectangle (shoulder ruffle) in half WST so short edges meet and place a mark at each side 3” from the bottom edge. Measure 4” in from the top edge and mark both edges. Draw a line (slightly curved outward) from the 3” mark to the 4” mark: cut along drawn line (Dia. D). Pin the ruffle RST with the Turquoise Tonal 5”x16” rectangle (shoulder ruffle lining) and cut lining to match. Pin the curved edges RST and sew a 1/4” seam. Turn right side out; press, topstitch close to edge and again 1/4” from edge.
Fold straight edge over 1” to the right side of the Chevron ruffle so that lining forms a casing for elastic. Press cut edge under ¼”; topstitch close to edge and at other edge. Attach safety pin to one end of elastic and insert into casing; sew securely at each end. (Dia. E)
Pin shoulder ruffle to dress front with wrong sides together at the 1-1/4” mark made in step 6; sew using a 1/4” seam.
Pin open end of neck ruffle over the seam and repeat for the other side of ruffle. Topstitch across neckline ruffle thru all thicknesses. Add another row or stitching 3/4” from top edge forming a casing and stitch at ends. Repeat above steps for second shoulder ruffle. Insert elastic through casing and stitch securely at each end.
Press the Lime 1”x18” rectangle (dress bow) in half so long edges meet.
Open and fold long edges inside to center crease; press and fold again. Sew close to the edge on both long sides. Sew to the top edge of front ruffle at the center; knot ends and make a bow.
Download and Print Project PDF for Owl Bag templates. Use templates to cut the Owl bag front and back from the Chevron (bag) and Lime Geo (lining) 8”x10” rectangles. Use the template to cut the Owl face from the Lime Geo 6”x9” rectangle.
Press the bottom edge of owl face under 1/4” and pin right side up to bag front matching edges. Topstitch along the bottom edge of the face; baste around the rest of the head.
Trace mask, eyes, flowers and beak onto fusible web and follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse the following; mask and flowers to Turquoise Floral 6”x6” square, eyes to Lime Geo 2”x4” rectangle and beak to Chevron 1/2”x1” rectangle.
Remove paper and press to the right side of face, centering and matching lower edge of face. Stitch around the mask with a blanket or satin stitch. Repeat to apply the eye circles, flowers and beak. Sew one 3/4” button on each eye circle.
Fold 4” of elastic cord in half and center between ears. An elastic hair tie can also be used. Sew across the ends several times 1/8” from the edge to secure the bag closure.
Pin the bag back with the wrong side to batting and baste 1/8” around outside edge. Pin the lining back RST with the bag back and sew the top edge by ears 1/4” between marks. Clip seam to stitching at the both marks. Turn right side out and press edge. Repeat to sew lining front to bag front.
Pin bag front and back RST and sew 1/4” around the remaining seam starting at the bottom of one ear. Backstitch at the beginning and end then zigzag or serge to finish the edge. Turn right side out and press.
Sew the short ends of the two Turquoise Tonal 2”x18” rectangles (owl bag straps) together using a 1/4” seam; press seams open.
Fold both long edges of strap in half lengthwise and press. Open and fold long edges inside to center crease; press and fold again. Sew close to the edge on both long sides. Pin one strap to the inside of the bag at a side seam; hand stitch. Bring the strap to the front of the bag, fold it down ½” then upward and sew by machine or hand to secure. Note: check for the correct length and shorten the strap if necessary. Repeat for the other end of the strap.
Sew 7/8” button centered at 1” from the top edge of the bag back.
