I was puzzled by the clasp, too, but it really is super easy. The smaller pin is just inside the larger barrel, and if you pull straight out, it will come loose. Add charm, and push it back in.

Necklace chain works well for older fingers
My grandson made carved pendants for both of his grandmothers and his great grandmothers. The clasps on the chains he used were difficult to operate. I have made a few necklaces with this kind of chain purchased from my local JoAnn store, but they were out of this style of chain. The clasp on this chain is a straight rod that fits into a rubber-lined barrel. It is very easy to operate.

I bought 6 chains. 2 were good, 2 won't close properly, and 2 broke trying to unclasp them.
