Towel is worked in one piece in the round to make a tube.
The yarn color is changed to form stripes.
Lettering is embroidered in duplicate st (sometimes called Swiss Darning). Duplicate st works over top of your original st, 'duplicating' the st in a new color yarn.
TOWEL:
With A, and leaving a long beg tail (about 1 yd (1 m)) for sewing, cast on 136 sts.
Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
With A, work in St st worked in rnds (k every st of every rnd) for 15 rnds.
With B, continue in St st worked in rnds for 10 rnds.
With A, continue in St st worked in rnds for 115 rnds.
With B, continue in in St st worked in rnds for 10 rnds.
With A, continue in St st worked in rnds for 15 rnds.
Bind off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.
FINISHING:
Duplicate Stitch Embroidery.
Lay Towel flat with cast on edge at bottom and flatten so that so that one half of sts (68 sts) are on front and one half of sts are on back.
Position lower left corner of lettering 3 rnds above the lower B-colored stripe and 2 sts in from the left edge (indicated by a yellow square on the Chart).
Follow Chart to embroider duplicate st lettering onto front of Towel.
Tip: Slide a magazine inside the Towel while you embroider to prevent stitching onto the back of the Towel.
Here's how to duplicate st:
Thread blunt needle with a length of B.
Find the column of sts where you'll begin to embroider the first letter. You'll see that the sts in the column look like V's.
Bring threaded needle through the fabric of the Towel, from the wrong side out to the right side at the point of the V that is 3 rnds above the lower B-colored stripe.
Now slide the needle under the stitch ABOVE the one you're duplicating.
Now insert the needle from front to back at the same point you began. You will have made a V in yarn color B over the V in yarn color A.
Continue in this same way to embroider all the sts on the Chart. It helps to keep track using a highlighter.
When you're finished, bring the yarn through to the wrong side of the Towel and knot.
Work back and forth in rows so that the work flows with the sts as evenly as possible. At the end of a row and between letters, avoid pulling yarn too tight so that the Towel can stretch without pulling on the lettering.
Turn Towel WS out. Weave Color B yarn tails into back of lettering so it doesn't show through on RS.
Turn Towel RS out. Using beginning and ending yarn tails, sew ends of Towel closed.
Be sure to lay Towel flat so lettering is properly spaced, and Towel isn't twisted.
Weave in remaining yarn ends.
