DIRECTIONS:

  1. This project creates one abstract clay painting.
  2. Choose a design from the GET PATTERNS tab above or create your own.
  3. To offer this project to young crafters as a sensory experience, combine the buttons, beads, sequins and pom-poms into different shallow bowls based on their color family.
  4. If creating a new design, encourage little ones to make handprints and/or finger prints for a nice keepsake.
  5. If using the templates, print the design and use scissors to cut out the shapes individually.
  6. Kneed clay to soften and mix colors as desired.
  7. Roll out clay to a 1/4" thickness.
  8. Cut clay shapes with scissors or cookie cutters and press onto canvas.
  9. Before the clay dries, add colorful buttons, beads, sequins and poms by pushing them deep into the clay.
  10. Stamp patterns using straws, mini cookie cutters and toothpicks.
  11. Add rolled coils of clay for more depth and extra interest.
  12. Let the clay piece dry according to the instructions on the Crayola® Model Magic package.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Mix darker Model Magic colors with ample amounts of white to create a softer palette.
  • Coloring the clay with markers also changes the color of Model Magic.
  • The provided designs are only suggestions. Choose your own colors and shapes to design your own clay painting.
  • Keep leftover clay in an airtight container or bag to keep it soft and pliable.
