Beginner Weekend Project

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Liquitex Basics Acrylic colors:
  • Titanium white
  • Neutral grey value 5
  • Naphthol crimson
  • Cadmium red deep hue
  • Fluorescent blue
  • Primary blue
  • Liquitex pouring medium
  • Non-stick, dust-free & grease-free surface (ie: smooth piece of glass or plastic)
  • 9 Plastic cups (for mixing)
  • Craft sticks
  • Scissors
  • Ruler (optional)
  • Painter's/masking tape (optional)
  • Gloves (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Protect your work surface with paper or plastic (recommended) and assemble supplies & tools.
  2. Prepare surface.
  3. Optional: To create a guide for each pour, use the tape to mark off 2 rectangles (for stripes & stars) and 1 square (for blue under stars). 1 rectangle will be used to cut 3 long red stripes & 4 short red stripes of desired size, 1 rectangle will be used to cut 3 long white/grey stripes, 3 short white/grey stripes of desired size & stars of desired quantity and size.
  4. Add pouring medium & paint into 6 plastic cups with quantities below:
    • Cup 1: 2 TBSP pouring medium + 1 teaspoon fluorescent blue
    • Cup 2: 2 TBSP pouring medium + 1 teaspoon primary blue
    • Cup 3: 1/3 Cup pouring medium + 1.5 teaspoons titanium white
    • Cup 4: 1/3 Cup pouring medium + 1.5 teaspoons neutral grey value 5
    • Cup 5: 1/3 Cup pouring medium + 1.5 teaspoons naphthol red
    • Cup 6: 1/3 Cup pouring medium + 1.5 teaspoons cadmium red deep hue
  5. Mix each color using clean craft stick for each cup, until all the pouring medium is incorporated.
  6. Using the blue colors from Cup 1 & Cup 2, combine them into an empty cup by pouring shallow layers in a circle motion, alternating between each blue until both Cup 1 & Cup 2 are empty.
  7. Using the white and grey colors from Cup 3 & Cup 4, combine them into an empty cup by pouring light layers in a circle motion, alternating between white and grey until both Cup 3 & Cup 4 are empty.
  8. Using the red colors from Cup 5 & Cup 6, combine them into an empty cup by pouring light layers in a circle motion, alternating between each red until both Cup 5 & Cup 6 are empty.
  9. In the blue mixture cup, use a clean craft stick to swirl the paint by stirring slowly/gently 1 time around.
  10. In the white/grey mixture cup, use a clean craft stick to swirl the paint by stirring slowly/gently 2-3 times around.
  11. In the red mixture cup, use a clean craft stick to swirl the paint by stirring slowly/gently 2-3 times around.
  12. Take the blue mixture cup, and slowly pour the outline of a square to desired size (following the square tape outline as a guide, if used). Fill in the square by pouring the remainder of the blue mixture.
  13. Take the white/grey mixture cup, and slowly pour the outline of a rectangle to desired size (following one of the rectangle tape outlines as a guide, if used). Fill in the rectangle by pouring the remainder of the white/grey mixture.
  14. Take the red mixture cup, and slowly pour the outline of a rectangle to desired size (following one of the rectangle tape outlines as a guide, if used). Fill in the rectangle by pouring the remainder of the red mixture.
  15. Depending on the thickness of the paint pool, let dry 24-48 hours.
  16. Once all 3 pools are completely dry, they can be peeled up from the surface.
  17. Using the scissors, cut the blue into a square of desired size.
  18. Cut stripes. Using the ruler for consistency, out of the red skin, cut 3 longer stripes of the same desired size and 4 shorter stripes of the same desired size. Then, 3 longer stripes of the white/grey skin to the same size as the red, and 3 shorter stripes of the same size as the red.
  19. Cut stars. Using a stencil, or freehand, cut desired size and number of stars out of the white/grey skin.
  20. Assemble flag. Pieces can be adhered to any desired surface (ie: a piece of wood, canvas, glass, etc.)
