SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 4 yds. of dark pink netting
  • 4 yds. of light pink netting
  • 1 spool of clear thread
  • 1 1/4 yd. of 1" grosgrain ribbon
  • 1 Pkg. of 1” elastic or the amount of waist.
  • 1 spool of thread to match grosgrain ribbon
  • Sewing notions

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Seams are 1/2" unless noted.
  2. Measure the desired length of skirt X 2. (EX: If the length is 18” then double length to equal 36”). Cut 4 dark pink, cut 4 light pink the 36” length and entire width of netting.
  3. Alternate light pink to dark pink together to make one layer, then repeat for the remaining layer. Thread clear thread to the bobbin and top thread of the sewing machine. Sew seams with a wide and long zig zag stitch with clear thread.
  4. Fold over skirt in half to equal 18”. The fold line becomes the waistline. Pin close to the fold line so that the netting doesn’t slip. Re-thread your machine with regular thread and gather to 9” larger than your waistline (this is so it goes over the hips). Remove pins just before getting close to the gathering stitch.
  5. Cut elastic the length of your waist minus 2". Sew elastic ends together. Divide netting and elastic into equal 4 sections. Match sections and top stitch elastic to wrong side of netting, stretching elastic to fit netting.
  6. Cut the Grosgrain ribbon to 9” larger than waist. Sew seams together, stitch to the top edge of elastic, stretching elastic to fit ribbon. The netting will be sandwiched between elastic and grosgrain ribbon. Sew grosgrain to netting to finish. Steaming the elastic after sewing, shrinks the stretched elastic slightly. (Do not iron just put iron closed to the elastic and stream it).
  7. Leave hem raw. Do not hem netting. If a shorter skirt is preferred cut netting at hem line.

Craft Hack Tips and Tricks:

  • When sewing netting with clear thread use a wide and longer zig zag stitch to make the seams almost invisible. When using clear thread, loosen top and bobbin tension slightly so that the clear thread will not break while sewing.
