DIRECTIONS:
CHANGING BASKET SHEET:
- Lay your mattress pad on your chosen fabric and trace and cut the fabric 4" larger than the mattress all the way around.
- Press the edges under twice to hem (1/4") and then stitch around to hold.
- Press the sides under once more about 1/2" to accommodate the elastic.
- Stitch this fold down close to the edge of the 1/2" to make sure there is a wide enough opening to thread through the elastic. You will notice gathering and folding as you sew around the circle, this is normal and won’t show since it is under the mattress pad. Leave a 2" opening in the circle.
- Use a safety pin to thread through your elastic.
- When you have successfully threaded your elastic through the entire sheet, stitch or triple tie the elastic together to create the circle and hold.
- Stitch along the 2" opening to close.
MINI QUILT:
Final Quilt Size - approx. 21"x 34"-
CUTTING LIST:
- Fabric A - (20) 4"x 4" squares
- Fabric B - (12) 4"x 4" squares
- Fabric C - (9) 4"x 4" squares
- Fabric D - (8) 4"x 4" squares
- Fabric E - (8) 4"x 4" squares
- Fabric F - (6) 4"x 4" squares
- Use the cut list above to cut and gather your squares for the quilt.
- Using the pattern for reference, stitch together all of your squares with a 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seams open and down as you piece it together.
- Press, trim and square off the entire quilt front using your rotary cutter and ruler.
- Sandwich together your backing fabric (wrong side up), batting and quilt front (right side up) on your work surface. Use your safety pins to baste the layers together.
- Quilt the layers together by stitching straight lines along the seam lines. Start by stitching all the vertical lines, followed by the horizontal lines.
- Trim and square off the quilt again.
- Attach the 3 binding strips together to form one long strip. This is done by stitching them together along the short edges. Do this by laying them in an L shape with the right sides together and stitching a diagonal line from the top left corner to the bottom right corner of the overlapping section. Press seams open. Do this again to attach the third strip.
- Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise with the wrong sides together and press.
- To attach the binding to your quilt, line up the raw edges of the top of your quilt with the raw edges of your folded binding piece (right sides together). Leave approx. 4" of the binding undone as you start so that when you finish stitching around the perimeter you can tuck some of the excess binding into this opening and do a final stitch over it.
- Fold the binding around to the back of the quilt and use your needle and thread to do an invisible stitch around the perimeter. All raw edges will now be hidden and the quilt is finished.
JOANN HACKS:
- When quilting the layers together, start with the inner seam lines first and work your way out (with both the horizontal and vertical stitches). This will help prevent fabric bunching on the back of your quilt.
- Make sure to pull and tug the fabric taut as you quilt.
