SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 2yds Alphabet Flannel Fabric for front
  • 2yds Animal Letter Fabric for back
  • Baby quilt size cotton batting
  • 1yd solid orange flannel OR extra wide double fold bias for binding
  • Clear ruler
  • Fabric marking pen of personal preference (the pen used here disappears with heat)
  • Coordinating thread
  • Fabric shears
  • Pins

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Prewash your fabrics using a baby-friendly detergent.
  2. Iron front & back fabrics from the back side.
  3. Cut the fabrics for front & back, using the full width, to 60" long. Trim off selvage edges.
  4. If using flannel as your binding cut 2 1/8" wide strips.
  5. Using a large table or the floor, place one fabric print side down.
  6. Layer the batting on top of the fabric. Start at a top corner and smooth out any wrinkles from there across the width & length.
  7. Layer the other fabric on, face up starting in the same top corner, making sure you smooth all wrinkles out. Make sure the pins are going the same direction.
  8. Using straight pins or pins meant for quilting, start at that top corner and pin rows across every few inches. Insert all pins the same direction to make removal easier. Check the back to see if there are any wrinkles you need to smooth out.
  9. Use a clear ruler to draw horizontal lines where you want your lines of quilting. (6" apart in image)
  10. Carefully roll up quilt to make easier to maneuver through your machine.
  11. Sew across your marked lines at a #3-4 stitch. Remove pins as you go if they are straight pins. Manhandle the fabric more than you normally would so the bottom fabric doesn’t feed through faster than the middle & top layers, especially since flannel likes to stretch.
  12. Trim the edges if the layers don’t all line up.
  13. If using flannel as binding, join strips into a long strip, using 45 degree seams.
  14. Sew binding down a side on the back, using a 1/2" seam allowance.
  15. Fold it around to the front, turning under the raw edge to make a 1/2" like the back. Barely cover the stitch line with the fold and sew right along the fold.
  16. Repeat for the other side.
  17. Start sewing binding along the top of the back like the sides with 1/2" hanging off the edge at the beginning.
  18. Sew the binding down on the front like you did on the sides, but begin by tucking the hanging edge inside your binding to create a clean corner.
  19. At the end of the piece tuck 1/2" inside to create a clean corner there too.
  20. Repeat steps 17-19 for the bottom.

JOANN HACKS:

  • When making corners with binding you can use the tip of a seam ripper to hold the seam allowance tucked in place.
