SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Polar Fleece or flannel
  • Fabric covered button kit
  • Coordinating thread
  • Fabric shears

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut 2 pieces of fleece or flannel fabric 49" x13".
  2. Layer 2 pieces facing inward. Sew around the perimeter with 1/2" seam allowance, leave a few inches open on one long side.
  3. Clip the seam allowance off on corners, making sure to not cut the stitching.
  4. Turn right side out through the opening you left.
  5. Topstitch 1/4" away from the edge. I like to start by securing the opening first, with seam allowance pushed inwards. Cover your button following the instructions with the kit.
  6. On a corner sew a buttonhole. NOTE: This button was too big for the buttonhole foot on our machine so we couldn't use the auto settings. After some trials on scrap to determine stitch settings (narrow for sides & wide for ends) we used a tight zigzag stitch to make our own buttonhole.
  7. Put cowl on and line up the corners to how you want them to lay. Mark where you want the button to go to line up with the hole. Sew the button on.

JOANN HACKS:

  • A chopstick inside really helps turn corners when you flip it right-side out.

  • Anytime you are doing buttonholes practice on scrap first. Then you can make sure you're starting/stopping it on the right spot. Sometimes you see you need to move the hole slightly to avoid a thick spot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This Scarf has possibilities and an alternative closure I'm not a fan of asymmetrical designs so I plan to make my scarf close where I find it comfortable. As for button hole for large decorative covered button - I plan to sew a snap behind the button and on the scarf and eliminate the need for making a hole!
