SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Favorite Sugar Cookie Cut-Out Recipe
  • Wilton® Baking Products:
    • Royal Icing (or homemade royal icing)
    • Gel Food Colors (gold, silver, bronze, etc.)
  • Flour
  • Edible Glitter Spray
  • Rolling Pin
  • Cookie Sheets
  • Cookie Cutter: Circle
  • Cookie Cutter: Mini Star (optional)
  • Wide Straw
  • Silicone Baking Mats (or parchment paper)
  • Icing Decorating Bottles, Bags & Tips (or parchment cones)
  • Scribe Tool (or toothpick)
  • Ribbon
  • Treat Bags

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Mix the sugar cookie ingredients together, following the recipe.
  2. Slightly coat the rolling surface with flour.
  3. Divide the dough into chunks & roll out until the dough is 1/4" thick.
  4. Use a circle cookie cutter to cut out dough & place onto a silicone mat or parchment paper-lined cookie sheet.
  5. Use a wide straw to cut a hole near the top of the circle (this is where the ribbon will be inserted later)
  6. If desired, use a mini star cutter & cut a few out.
  7. Place rolled-out dough onto cookie sheets & freeze for 5 minutes before cutting out shapes. This will help to prevent dough from becoming misshapen when moving & baking.
  8. Follow baking instructions according to your favorite recipe & cool completely before decorating.
  9. Use the recipe on Wilton's® meringue powder to mix up royal icing or use premade icing.
  10. Scoop out some royal icing & gradually thin with water to get your piping & flood consistencies.
  11. Tint with food coloring to desired colors such as silver, gold & bronze. For the medal cookies, piping consistency & flood consistency is needed for each medal color.
  12. Place these into either bags or bottles.
  13. If using decorating tips, #1 or #2 is best for piping & #3 or #4 is best for flooding.
  14. Decorate the base layer of the circle cookies & mini stars by outlining with piping consistency icing then flooding. If needed, use a scribe tool or toothpick to spread icing & pop air bubbles.
  15. While the base layer is still wet, spray the edible glitter onto each cookie.
  16. Let the base layer dry for a couple hours before adding additional details.
  17. Once the base layer has crusted over, use the piping icing of each medal color to add any details.
  18. Details could include words such as WINNER, SUPER & 2023, as well as dots, stars & stripes.

For Mini Star Cookies:

  1. After the base layer is mostly dry, use piping consistency to adhere the mini star cookies to the circle medal cookies. Allow cookies to dry completely, at least 8-10 hours, before packaging them up.
  2. When cookies are completely dry, cut the ribbon to desired length for the medal & thread through the hole in the cookie.
  3. Tie loose ends together.
  4. Cover the cookie in a treat bag & use a smaller ribbon to tie the bag shut.
