Blanket is made from 18 Spiral Squares, 18 Checkerboard Squares, and 36 Granny Squares for a total of 72 Squares.
Spiral Squares and Granny Squares are worked in rnds. Checkerboard Squares are worked back and forth in rows. Be careful to follow specific instructions for changing yarn color on each Square.
Squares are sewn together following Diagram.
A border is worked around outside edge of Blanket.
SPIRAL SQUARES
(make 18)
With A, ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
NOTES:
Each rnd is worked using 4 yarn colors to form 4 spirals. Do not turn at the beg of rnds.
In Rnd 1, when instructed to change yarn color, remove loop of old color from hook and place it on a stitch marker so that it does not unravel, do not fasten off. Draw up a loop of new color in ring immediately following last st of old color. Keep colors not in use on wrong side of piece.
Rnd 1 (RS): With A, ch 1, (sc, hdc, 2 dc) in ring; change to B, ch 1, (sc, hdc, 2 dc) in ring; change to C, ch 1, (sc, hdc, 2 dc) in ring; change to D, ch 1, (sc, hdc, 2 dc) in ring; do not join, work in continuous rnds - you will have a total of 16 sts in this rnd (4 A sts, 4 B sts, 4 C sts, and 4 D sts).
NOTES:
In all following rnds, to change yarn color, remove loop of old color from hook and place it on a stitch marker so that it does not unravel. Return the loop of the next color to the hook and proceed as instructed.
You will work the same pattern of sts with each yarn color, working A sts into B-colored sts, B sts into C-colored sts, C sts into D-colored sts, and D sts into A-colored sts.
Rnd 2: Change to A, working into B-colored sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, leaving last B-colored st unworked; change to B, working into C-colored sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, leaving last C-colored st unworked; change to C, working into D-colored sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, leaving last D-colored st unworked; change to D, working in A-colored sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; change to A - 24 sts (6 sts of each of the 4 yarn colors).
Rnd 3: With A, * 2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st; change to next color; rep from * 3 more times using B, C, then D - 32 sts (8 sts of each of the 4 yarn colors).
Rnd 4: With A, * 2 dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts, 2 dc in next st; change to next color; rep from * 3 more times using B, C, then D - 40 sts (10 sts of each of the 4 yarn colors).
Rnd 5: With A, * 2 dc in next st, dc in next 7 sts, 2 dc in next st; change to next color; rep from * 3 more times using B, C, then D - 48 sts (12 sts of each of the 4 yarn colors).
Rnd 6: With A, * 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in next st, fasten off current yarn color; change to next color; rep from * 2 more times using B and C; with D, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in next st. Do not fasten off D - 52 sts (13 sts of each of the 4 yarn colors).
Rnd 7: With D, sc in next 7 sts, 3 sc in next st, * sc in next 12 sts, 3 sc in next st; rep from * around to last 5 sts, sc in last 5 sts; join with sl st in first sc - 60 sc.
Fasten off.
CHECKERBOARD SQUARES
(make 18 - 6 in each of the 3 Color Combinations)
Color Combination #1: C, B.
Color Combination #2: A, C.
Color Combination #3: B, A.
NOTE: To change yarn color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete st. Proceed with new color. Do not fasten off old color until instructed.
With first color, ch 16.
Row 1 (RS): Dc in 4th ch from hook (3 skipped ch count as dc) and next 5 ch; change to 2nd color, dc in last 7 ch - you will have 14 dc in this row (7 dc in first color, and 7 dc in 2nd color).
Row 2: With 2nd color, ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, sk first st, dc in next 6 sts; change to first color, dc in last 7 sts.
Row 3: With first color, ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, sk first st, dc in next 6 sts; change to 2nd color, dc in last 7 sts.
Row 4: Rep Row 2.
Fasten off both colors
Row 5 (RS): From RS, draw up a loop of 2nd color in first st, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 6 sts; change to first color, dc in last 7 sts.
Row 6: With first color, ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, sk first st, dc in next 6 sts; change to 2nd color, dc in last 7 sts.
Row 7: With 2nd color, ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, sk first st, dc in next 6 sts; change to first color, dc in last 7 sts.
Row 8: Rep Row 6.
Fasten off both colors.
Trim
Rnd 1: From RS, draw up a loop of D in first st, ch 1, 3 sc in same st, sc in next 12 sts, 3 sc in last st; work 12 sc as evenly spaced along side edge; working along foundation ch, 3 sc in first ch, sc in next 12 ch, 3 sc in next ch; work 12 sc as evenly spaced along next side edge; join with sl st in first st - 60 sc.
Fasten off.
GRANNY SQUARES
(make 36 - 18 in each of the 2 Color Sequence)
Color Sequence #1: Work Rnd 1 with C, Rnd 2 with B, Rnd 3 with A, and Rnds 4 and 5 with D.
Color Sequence #2: Work Rnd 1 with D, Rnd 2 with C, Rnd 3 with B, Rnd 4 with A, and Rnd 5 with D.
With first color, ch 5.
Rnd 1 (RS): Dc in 5th ch from hook (4 skipped ch count as dc, ch 1), (ch 1, dc in same ch) 10 times, ch 1; join with sl st in 4th ch of beg ch-5 - you will have 12 dc and 12 ch-1 sps in this rnd.
Fasten off.
Rnd 2: From RS, draw up a loop of 2nd color in any ch-1 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same ch-1 sp, * ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around, ch 1; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3 - 24 dc (twelve 2-dc groups) and 12 ch-1 sps.
Fasten off.
Rnd 3: From RS, draw up a loop of 3rd color in any ch-1 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same ch-1 sp, * ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around, ch 1; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3 - 36 dc (twelve 3-dc groups) and 12 ch-1 sps.
Fasten off.
Rnd 4: From RS, draw up a loop of 4th color in any ch-1 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-1 sp (first corner made), * (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) twice, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-1 sp (corner made); rep from * 2 more times, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) twice, ch 1; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3 - 48 dc, 12 ch-1 sps, and 4 corner ch-3 sps (four 3-dc groups and 3 ch-1 sps along each of 4 sides between corner ch-3 sps).
NOTES:
If you are following Color Sequence #1, proceed to Rnd 5.
If you are following Color Sequence #2, fasten off 4th color. From RS, draw up a loop of 5th color in any st, then proceed to Rnd 5.
Rnd 5 (RS): Ch 1, sc in each st and ch-1 sp around, working 3 sc in each corner ch-3 sp; join with sl st in first sc - 72 sc.
Fasten off.
FINISHING
Sew Squares together following Diagram 1.
BORDER
Rnd 1 (RS): From RS, draw up a loop of C anywhere along outer edge of Blanket, ch 1, sc evenly spaced around outside edge, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc.
Fasten off.
Rnd 2: From RS, draw up a loop of D in any st, work sc in each st around, working 3 sc in center sc of each 3-sc corner; join with sl st in first sc.
Fasten off.
Rnd 3: With B, rep Rnd 2.
Fasten off.
Weave in ends.

As usual, the IT guys at Joann cannot actually put a full pattern in the "download" section the comes with the email. Instead, they put only the piecing chart in the download section and the actual instructions are written on the website page. Come on guys, figure it out!
