DIRECTIONS:

To find the downloadable patterns click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.
  1. For an 18" x 18" pillow, cut a 19" x 19" piece of cotton fabric for the pillow body. Cut two 13" x 19" rectangles for the envelope back. Set aside.
  2. Cut twenty-four 3" x 12" strips out of your varied cotton bat fabrics.
  3. Cut twenty-four 3" x 6" strips of Pellon Wonder-Under fusible web.
  4. Fold bat fabric strips in half, matching short edges together, and press to make a crease.
  5. Place a Wonder-Under Strip on the wrong side of a bat fabric strip, matching it to one of the creased halves, press and hold with iron for 5-8 seconds. Repeat for all twenty-four pieces.
  6. Remove paper backing from Wonder-Under, fold the bat fabric over top along the crease, and place a damp press cloth over top. With the iron on Wool setting, press iron firmly over top for 10-15 seconds to fuse fabrics together.
  7. Trace Bat Stencil onto the fused fabric with a disappearing ink pen and cut out with scissors. Set aside.
  8. On the 19" x 19" fabric, use chalk to mark a 1/2" seam allowance around the entire square on the wrong side of the fabric. Then draw a grid of 2" x 3" horizontal rectangles on the 18" x 18" square within. On each of the 24 rectangles in the grid, make a mark in the center, 1" from the top of the rectangle, and make an X with two pins over the point.
  9. Flip the fabric to the right side, and place each bat so the head of the bat lines up with the pin X. Pin the body of the bats in place and remove the pin Xs from the back.
  10. Sew each bat body on with an upside-down triangle that follows the shape of the bat body; leave the wings and ears unsewn. Sew all 24 bats and set aside.
  11. Finish one long edge of each backing piece - fold in the raw edge 1/4" to the wrong side and press; then fold in another 1/2", press, and pin. Edgestitch along inner folded edge.
  12. With right sides together, align the raw edges of one backing piece with the top and side edges of the pillow and pin in place. Align the raw edges of the remaining backing piece with the bottom and side edges of the pillow and pin in place.
  13. Sew around the entire pillow square with 1/2" seam allowance. Trim off the points of each corner within the seam allowance and turn right side out through the backing opening.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Make the bat wings pop out by folding the inner part of the wings in towards the center of the bat body and pressing with an iron; then flatten out the crease of the iron a little by hand.
