SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Unfinished wood sign
- Paint brush
- Water/paper towels for clean up
- Black chalkboard paint
- Chalk
- White vinyl/transfer tape
- Computer & Cricut
- Cutting mat
- Weeding tool
- Burnishing tool/credit card
- Provided SVG file
DIRECTIONS:
- Paint the unfinished wood portion of the sign with black chalkboard paint and set aside to dry. This may take several coats depending on the desired finish you want.
- While the paint is drying move to the computer to upload your .svg files for cutting.
- Load the desired file (2 options are provided) and set the material to vinyl.
- Place the vinyl onto the cutting mat, face up and load into the Cricut.
- Let the Cricut cut out the design and feed out the mat when finished.
- Remove the vinyl from the mat. Weed the excess vinyl from the cutout leaving the design on the backer paper.
- Check that the painted sign is dry, once it is dry lightly cover the surface with chalk and wipe off, this will give it a conditioned look and more like a used chalk board.
- Place a layer of transfer tape over the entire vinyl design and remove the backer from the vinyl so the vinyl is now on the transfer tape.
- Position the vinyl design over the sign and apply to the sign.
- Use a burnishing tool or credit card to secure in place by rubbing it over the transfer tape securing the vinyl to the sign.
- Carefully remove the transfer tape and rub over the design to make sure it is all firmly in place.
JOANN HACKS:
- When "weeding" or removing the unwanted vinyl from the design pull the vinyl back onto itself for the easiest removal. The sharp angle tends to help pull the design away best. Pull back slowly and remove pieces as you go to make it easier to work with. Use the weeding tool to hold down any letters that may start to pull up.
