Bernat Velvet Hat

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

• Size 6 Circular Needle
• Size 8 Circular Needle
• Size 8 Double Pointed Needles
• Bernat® Velvet Yarn Skein, Colors of Choice (4) (Sample shows Clay Rose, Red, Velveteal and Golden Moss)
• 5 Stitch Markers
• Crochet Hook (to tuck in ends)

DIRECTIONS:

On size 6 needle, cast on 68 stiches and join to work in the round
Place stich marker at beginning of row
K2, P2 for 13 rows

Optional for folded brim hat: knit one row
Note that you can wear this hat slouchy or with a folded brim. If you prefer a folded brim knitting one row gives you a nice folded edge

K2, P2 for 13 more rows
Knit 1 row
Cut color 1
Switch to size 8 needle
Add color 2
Knit 3 rows
Cut color 2
Add color 3
Knit 4 rows
On row 5, you're going to place 4 stitch markers to indicate where you will decrease for the crown
K14, PM, K13, PM, K14, PM, K13, PM, K14
Cut color 3
Add color 4

Knit 1 row, slipping markers as you go
Decrease row 1: P2tgr, knit until 2 stitches before marker, P2tgr, slip marker, P2tgr… repeat until end of round, purling 2tgr before and after each stitch marker
Next 2 rounds, purl each stitch before and after each stitch marker, knit all over stitches
Decrease row 2: P2tgr, knit until 2 stitches before marker, P2tgr, slip marker, P2tgr… repeat until end of round, purling 2tgr before and after each stitch marker
Next 2 rounds, purl each stitch before and after each stitch marker, knit all over stitches
Decrease row 3: P2tgr, knit until 2 stitches before marker, P2tgr, slip marker, P2tgr… repeat until end of round, purling 2tgr before and after each stitch marker
Next 2 rounds, purl each stitch before and after each stitch marker, knit all over stitches
Decrease row 4: P2tgr, knit until 2 stitches before marker, P2tgr, slip marker, P2tgr… repeat until end of round, purling 2tgr before and after each stitch marker
Next 2 rounds, purl each stitch before and after each stitch marker, knit all over stitches
*Note that once your stitch count decreases you may need to change to double pointed needles or magic loop
Decrease row 5: P2tgr, knit until 2 stitches before marker, P2tgr, slip marker, P2tgr… repeat until end of round, purling 2tgr before and after each stitch marker
Next 2 rounds, purl each stitch before and after each stitch marker, knit all over stitches
Cut a tail 8-10inches in length and pull through remaining stitches to bind off

Optional: make and attach pom pom
