Beginner Weekend Project
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • 6 yds Mickey fabric
  • 4 yds black flannel
  • 2 yds gray plaid flannel
  • Twin size cotton batting
  • Painter’s tape
  • Pencil
  • Sewing machine & thread
  • Rotary cutter, cutting mat & straightedge
  • Iron
  • Sewing clips
  • Straight pins

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Mark a 66"x 89" rectangle on the floor as a guide, and roll the cotton batting over top. Mark the 66"x 89" rectangle on the cotton batting with a pencil, then cut out the rectangle with your rotary cutter and straight edge, moving the cutting mat underneath the batting as needed. As you trim, keep checking that your edges keep in alignment with your taped rectangle.
  2. Begin to piece together the underside of the quilt with the Mickey fabric. Orient the fabric so that the images are facing correctly. You will need to piece together two lengths of Mickey fabric to cover the 66" width, and you will need three rows to cover the 89" length. Align your edges right sides together, pin, sew, and press seam open with iron. Repeat to cover entire underside of quilt. Secure with sewing clips and baste onto cotton batting.
  3. Cut black flannel into five strips that are 11"x 66".
  4. Cut gray plaid flannel into four strips that are 8.5"x 66".
  5. Lay out fabric strips onto quilt backing, alternating black and gray, starting with black at the top and finishing with black at the bottom. Overlap fabric strips the width of the seam allowance - 5/8". Ensure that the strips cover the entirety of the quilt with all five black strips being equal width and all four gray strips being equal width. Adjust until equal, if necessary.
  6. Sew together flannel strips lengthwise, right sides together, beginning with black at the top and alternating between black and gray until ending with black at the bottom. Press seams open with iron.
  7. Use sewing clips to secure pieced top quilt flannel to the quilt backing and right side of flannel to right side of Mickey fabric.
  8. Sew all the way around the quilt, leaving 18" open at the bottom to pull quilt right side out.
  9. Trim triangles off of corners to reduce bunching, and pull quilt right side out.
  10. Fold in the 18" opening, press with iron, secure with clips, and sew.
  11. Topstitch the seams of the quilt stripes - pin down the seam of the stripe and sew down the length.
