SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Red sweatshirt
- Bleach kit (gloves, rubber bands, bleach)
- Bucket or sink (if using a sink stick to galvanized or metal to avoid staining from dye)
- Cookie sheet
- Gallon plastic bag
- Washing machine
- Iron-on applique
- Iron/ironing surface
- Scissors
DIRECTIONS:
- Dampen shirt.
- Fill the bleach kit bottle with warm water. Let the bleach substance dissolve in water while you rubber band the sweatshirt.
- Lay the sweatshirt on a flat surface. Scrunch portions of the sweatshirt up and band the gathered sections. Repeat until the entire sweatshirt is banded.
- Place your rubber banded sweatshirt on a cookie sheet. Wearing rubber gloves, apply the bleach solution to different areas of the sweatshirt. The more you add the more bleached out it will get. Don't forget to flip the sweatshirt over and do both sides.
- Place the bleached sweatshirt in a plastic bag to let the bleach soak in, you will see the color change.
- Rinse in cold water.
- Wash in washing machine with light detergent. Make sure to wash with other bleached items so bleach doesn't transfer onto other garments. Dry.
- Once the sweatshirt is dry, lay it onto an ironing board or iron safe surface. Read the applique instructions for the heat setting for that particular applique.
- Place the applique on the center of the sweatshirt and iron in place.
- Use sharp scissors to cut the bottom off of the sweatshirt to crop it.
Craft Hack Tips and Tricks:
- After squirting the dye onto the fabric squeeze the shirt to push the bleach into the bunched areas of the shirt, the tip of the application can be placed between folds to apply more bleach into the folds as well.
- The longer your bleach sits the whiter your shirt will become.
