DIRECTIONS:
- Determine the size you’d like your banner to be. Cut a rectangle from the canvas or fabric of your choice, adding 1/2" seam allowance on 3 sides and extra length for the channel at the top to accommodate the dowel. In this case, the fabric was cut to 15" wide (14" + 1/2" on each side) and 16" tall (14" + 1/2" seam and 1 1/2" to fold over on top for 1/2" dowel). If you choose a dowel with a different circumference, you may need to adjust the amount needed for this step.
- Canvas tends to fray when cut, so using pinking shears may help keep that to a minimum. Fold in edges of sides and bottom 1/2" and stitch. (Hot glue, or fabric glue will also work). Fold the top edge over about 1 1/2" down and stitch to create channel for dowel. If sewing, you can immediately move on to applying the HTV, if you’re using hot or fabric glue, allow adequate cooling or drying time according to the manufacture directions.
- For the HTV, assign colors to layers accordingly. In this case, EasyWeed Fluorescent Green HTV was used for the stems and leaves, EasyWeed Black HTV for the type, and so on. Pick a variety of colors for the flowers, or keep it minimal with one or two colors.
- Place EasyWeed Fluorescent Green HTV with the carrier side facing down on the cutting mat. Mirror design and cut. Repeat for EasyWeed Black and the rest of the colors chosen for the flowers. Cut pieces from each sheet and use a weeder to remove excess material from your design. Use the butcher paper as a temporary backer sheet to keep the pieces from sticking to each other. This will also help you to layer the colors on top of one another to check for position and order before pressing.
- Center the design in the middle of the banner starting with the EasyWeed Fluorescent Green HTV. When layering multiple colors, use tacks (1-3 second presses) with medium pressure. Always remember to cover HTV with parchment paper for each press. Work in quadrants if you are using a press that doesn’t cover the entire design. Line up the other EasyWeed® HTV colors and repeat the process for each application. If you find that the layers don’t line up exactly, you can cut the carrier sheet as needed and position pieces separately to create a better fit. Press the last color for a full 15 seconds. Remove carrier sheet.
- Sew, hot glue or use the fabric glue to add the pom pom fringe to the bottom of the banner.
- Cut dowel rod to size and insert into fabric channel at the top of the banner. Add cord or ribbon to each end of dowel, secure with a dab of hot glue.
- This multi-layer design requires some planning to ensure you apply the HTV in the correct order. Pressing the green leaves and stems first will give you a guide for applying the additional colors. Some of the elements are layered, such as the hearts on top of the text, so be sure to keep that as the last color applied.
- Add an additional 30F to the recommended settings anytime you are using a Cricut® EasyPress™.
