Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy way to make a dress Simple and easy to make a dress from this fabric. I used one of the Joann sewing project direction on the website and the smocked fabric was easy to use, washed well, and is comfortable to wear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for even beginners! I recently started learning how to sew and this was the first time I sewed an outfit that I could wear. It turned out just as how I envisioned it to be! :)

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Shirred with elastic, not smocked On the website this is labeled as smocked 100% cotton. This fabric is not smocked, it is shirred with thread that is 68% polyester and 32% spandex, according to the label on the bolt. Smocking is a technique that involves pleating and embroidery stitches, using thread that is 100% cotton or 100% linen and NOT stretchy elastic thread, to create a stretchy section of fabric. Shirring is a technique that uses elastic thread to create a stretchy portion of fabric. I am disappointed that this fabric was incorrectly labeled and made with synthetic thread, as I try to use only biodegradable materials for crafting. A longstanding fabric store chain should know better! Please at least update the listing on your website to mention that the thread is polyester and spandex. It would be even better if you could change the label on both the website and the bolts of fabric to “shirred” instead on “smocked “. The current label makes it look like you are too ignorant to know the difference. I will keep this fabric and use it because the dress is for someone else who doesn’t mind synthetics, but I won’t be buying fabric labeled “smocked” from Joanne’s fabric again.
