SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1"x 24" Leather Strapping
  • Wood Burning Tool & Assorted Tips
  • Cricut® Machine
  • Green Mat
  • Cricut® Weeder
  • Adhesive Vinyl, Any Color
  • Acrylic Paint, Dark Brown
  • Small Foam Brush
  • X-Acto® Knife
  • Quick Grip Glue

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut leather strap to be slightly longer than the measurement around the base of the hat. The final trim will be done once the letters and shapes are completely burned in the leather strap, including burning the top edge of the strap.
  2. In Design Space™ online, create desired shapes and any verbiage that to burn onto the leather strap. The words and shapes must be only 3/4" tall.
  3. Create the layout in Design Space and cut it out in the adhesive vinyl. It is best to make two strips of words and shapes, one for each side and so the design meets in the middle in the front and back of the hat.
  4. Center the adhesive layout on the sides of the hat.
  5. Peel off the backing as you are pressing it onto the strap.
  6. Remove the letters and any inside shapes that you want to be burned. Keep the background area onto the leather.
  7. Use the acrylic paint and small brush to fill in the letters and shapes to create your burning stencil.
  8. Once the paint is dry, remove all the adhesive vinyl.
  9. Use one of the small tips and the smallest slanted tips to burn in the letters and shapes. Take your time and burn the letters and shapes with the same pressure to keep the spread of the burning consistent.
  10. Once you have made all the letters and shapes, switch out the tip on the wood burner to the flat circle disk.
  11. Run the flat circle disk across the top edge of the leather strap to give it a finished burned edge. As you are burning the top edge, you will notice that the strap will shrink and start to curve. This is helpful when you are going to place the strap around the brim of the hat.
  12. Once done, use a small amount of Quick grip glue to anchor the strap onto the hat at the back of the hat.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Tip the wood burner on an angle to get sharp edges in the design.
