18 sts + 28 rows = about 4” in cable pattern.

2/2 LC (2 over 2 left cross) Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k2, then k2 from cable needle.
Yo (yarn over)
A way to create a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:
1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates the new st.
Cast on 52 sts.
Row 1 (WS): *P2, k2, p4, k2; rep from * to last 2 sts, p2.
Row 2: *K2, p2, k4, p2; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 3: Rep Row 1.
Row 4: *k2, p2, 2/2 LC, p2; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Rep Rows 1-4 until piece measures about 1-3/4” from beg, end with a Row 1 or 3 as the last row you work.
Next (Buttonhole) Row: K2tog, yo, work in pattern as established to end of row.
Continue to work in pattern as established until piece measures about 3-1/2” from beg.
Sew sides of Cozy together for about 1/2" at top and at bottom, leaving remaining 2-1/2" open for mug handle.
With sewing needle and thread, sew button onto edge of handle opening, opposite buttonhole.
