SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Cotton fabric_x000B_Cutting mat_x000B_Rotary cutter _x000B_Tape measure
  • Clear quilting ruler
  • Iron_x000B_Hand needle_x000B_Pins

DIRECTIONS:

  1. To decide how big of panels to cut, add 12 inches to the finished length you want your curtains to be. Here we're making 24-inch cafe curtains so we're going to cut our curtain pieces to be 36 inches long and the width will be the width of our fabric.
  2. Once you have your two pieces cut, you'll need to iron up the sides. Iron in the sides (the 36-inch side of your fabric piece) one inch so that the wrong sides are touching each other. Then iron them over again by one inch so you have a clean edge. Pin in place. Once you've ironed both of the 36" sides in, topstitch them in place.
  3. After topstitching the edges you'll need to iron up the hem and the curtain rod pocket. To do this, with the wrong side of the fabric up iron up from the unfinished edges 3 inches. Then fold them over and iron them again. Pin in place.
  4. Decide which side is the top of your curtain and which is the bottom, if you have a directional pattern this is important! Once you've decided which is which we'll start with the bottom.
  5. To sew the bottom hem, sew 1/4 of an inch along the top of the fold you've created.
  6. To sew the top hem, you'll measure from the very top of your piece down. Sew one inch from the top of your curtain panel. This will form the curtain header. Then you'll measure 2.75 inches from the top of your piece (or 1/4 inch from your folded in edge) and sew another line. This will complete the curtain rod channel.
  7. Press, hang and enjoy!

JOANN HACKS:

  • When measuring out your panels of fabric, tape an end of measuring tape to the edge of a table to use as a guide.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from cafe curtains project these are excellent instructions, one other hint: use the old curtains as a guide [if you have those]
