SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 3 1/2yds fabric
  • 1yd of backing fabric
  • 4 1/2yds braided piping trim
  • Sewing machine with zipper foot
  • Basic sewing supplies

  • 58" of 2" thick cushion foam

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut (2) 59"x 19" rectangles and 155"x 3" strip (will need to piece) out of fabric. 1/2" seam allowance is included.
  2. Add piping to right sides of 59" rectangles using a zipper foot. Piping should be sewn just inside the seam allowance. See section below for braided trim tips.
  3. Sew piped rectangle to 3" strip, right-sides together, stitching close to piping with zipper foot. Stop sewing 2" before finishing rectangle. Trim 3" strip to length required to finish and stitch seam.
  4. Transfer marks for corners to other side of 3" strip.
  5. Sew second piped rectangle to other side of 3" strip, right-sides together, stitching close to piping with zipper foot. Leave a 18" opening for turning.
  6. Fill item with cushion foam and slip-stitch opening closed.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Clip into piping seam allowance to allow trim to move around corners nicely.
  • To create a seamless finish with braided piping:
  • Cut piping 2" longer on each side of finished length for pillow (enough to overlap). After sewing, unravel extra length at ends. Weave ends together by laying individual strands of braid over each other and into the seam allowance. Sew over ends in seam allowance to lock in strands.

Square Envelope Piped Pillowcase (12")

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/4yd of main fabric
  • 1/2yd of backing fabric

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut (1) 13" square out of main fabric and (2) 10"x 13" rectangles out of backing fabric. 1/2" seam allowance is included.
  2. Finish one long side each of rectangle with ¼" hem.
  3. Overlap finished edges of rectangles (right-side to wrong-side) to create 13" square and baste seam allowances together.
  4. Add piping to all edges of main fabric square using a zipper foot. Piping should be sewn just inside the seam allowance. See section below for braided trim tips.
  5. Sew main square to backing fabric square, right-sides together, stitching close to piping with zipper foot.
  6. Finish seam allowances using a serger or zigzag stitch.

  3. Overlap finished edges of rectangles (right-side to wrong-side) to create 21" square and baste seam allowances together.

Piped Bolster Pillow (18"x 8")

  • 16oz Poly-Fil®

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut (1) 27"x 19" rectangle and (2) 9" circles out of fabric.
  2. Add piping to right sides of both circles using a zipper foot. Piping should be sewn just inside the seam allowance. See section below for braided trim tip.
  3. Sew rectangle into tube (short, right-sides together), leaving 4" hole in the middle of seam for turning and filling.
  4. Sew circles to each short end of tube, right-sides together.
  5. Fill item with Poly-Fil and slip-stitch opening closed.

Circular Box Cushion Pillow (14")

  • 16oz bag of Poly-Fil®

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut (1) 50"x 3" strip of bias (may have to piece) and (1) 15" circle out of main fabric. Cut (1) 15" circle out of backing fabric. 1/2" seam allowance is included.
  2. Add piping to right sides of both circles using a zipper foot. Piping should be sewn just inside the seam allowance. See section below for braided trim tips.
  3. Sew main fabric circle to main fabric bias, right-sides together, stitching close to piping with zipper foot. Stop sewing 2" before finishing circle. Trim bias to length required to finish circle and stitch seam. Sew backing circle to other end of bias, leaving a small hole for turning.
  4. Fill pillow with Poly-Fil and slip-stitch turning hole closed.

Quilted Piped Lumbar Pillowcase (14"x28")

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/2yd fabric for quilted topper, 2

  • Basic sewing supplies

  • Ruler

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut (6) 6"x 8" rectangles out of each quilted topper fabric and (2) 14"x 21" rectangles out of backing fabric. 1/2" seam allowance is included.
  2. Finish one short side of each backing rectangle with ¼" hem.
  3. Sew three strips of 4 rectangles (short, right sides together), then sew strips (right, long sides together) to create a checkerboard pattern. Press seams to one side.
  4. Overlap finished edges of rectangles (right-side to wrong-side) to create 28" rectangle and baste seam allowances together.
  5. Add piping to all edges of quilted topper using a zipper foot. Piping should be sewn just inside the seam allowance. See section below for braided trim tips.
  6. Sew main topper to backing fabric rectangle, right-sides together, stitching close to piping with zipper foot.
  7. Finish seam allowances using a serger or zigzag stitch.

  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Iron

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut (1) 14"x 10" rectangle, (2) 10"x 7" rectangles and (2) 14"x 7" rectangles of both lining and outer fabrics.
  2. Cut (1) 13"x 9" rectangle, (2) 9"x 6" rectangles and (2) 13"x 6" rectangles out of interfacing. Cut (1) 1"x 7" rectangle out of interfacing and (1) 3"x 9" rectangle out of outer fabric.
  3. Apply interfacing to wrong-side of outer fabric rectangles (following manufacturer’s instructions), leaving 1/2" seam allowance around all edges. Center 7" fusible rectangle 1/2" from the edge of wrong side of 9" rectangle and attach, following manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Press 1/2" seam allowance toward interfacing on small rectangle. Fold piece in half, covering interfacing. Edge stitch down both long sides. Create 1/2" hem on both small ends of each small rectangle and place 3" down (centered) on “front" 10"x 7" rectangle outer piece. Topstitch into place.
  5. Sew four rectangles right-sides together to form a 13"x 9" rectangle (stopping 1/2" from bottom of seam).
  6. Sew remaining 14"x 10" rectangle to bottom.
  7. Sew lining rectangle in same fashion as outer.
  8. Press seam allowance of unfinished “top" of both outer and inner cubes toward the wrong side. Place lining into outer cube, wrong-sides together. Edge stitch around top edge to finish.

Rigid Storage Bin (13")

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 3 1/21yd outer fabric
  • 1yd lining fabric
  • 2yds Pellon® 71F fusible interfacing
  • Sewing machine
  • Jeans sewing machine needle
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Iron

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut (5) 14" squares out of both outer and lining fabrics. Cut (5) 13"x 13" squares out of interfacing. Cut (1) 6"x 4" rectangle out of interfacing and (1) 8"x 9" rectangle out of outer fabric. ½" seam allowance is included.
  2. Apply interfacing to wrong-side of outer fabric squares (following manufacturer’s instructions), leaving 1/2" seam allowance around all edges. Center 6" fusible rectangle 1/2" from the edge of wrong side of 9" rectangle and attach, following manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Press 1/2" seam allowance toward interfacing on small rectangle on long sides. Fold piece in half (long sides together), covering interfacing. Edge stitch down both long sides. Create 1/2" hem on both small ends of each small rectangle and place 4" down (centered) on “front" square outer piece. Topstitch into place.
  4. Sew four 14"x 14" interfaced squares right-sides together to create a cube (stopping 1/2" from bottom of seam).
  5. Sew remaining square to bottom of cube.
  6. Sew lining cube and bottom in same fashion as outer.
  7. Press seam allowance of unfinished “top" of both outer and inner cubes toward wrong side. Place lining into outer cube, wrong-sides together. Edge stitch around top edge to finish.
