SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Scissors
- Embroidery thread: multiple colors
- Crayola® Model Magic modeling clay
- Tape
- Keychain ring
- Small items from nature: pinecone, leaves, pine tree limb, artificial plants & flowers
- Toothpick
DIRECTIONS:
- Create keychain charms by using Crayola modeling clay. Roll a small piece of clay into a ball and then flatten the ball. Use a toothpick to poke a small hole towards the top so you can thread the string through to attach the charm to the keychain later.
- Using small items from nature like leaves and pinecones, press items onto the clay charm to create imprints. Allow modeling clay to air dry for at least 24 hours.
- Cut desired colors of thread into 24" pieces.
- Attach each thread to the keychain ring using a reverse lark's head knot. Make sure all thread is lined up and there are no tangled threads. If using multiple colors, the colors should mirror each other across. The more strands of thread used, the wider the design will be.
- Start with the thread on the far left, and make a 90 degree angle with the tying string over the top of the string you are tying it to. Then loop the tying string underneath the other string and pull tight. Repeat and make two knots on each string.
- Once you have knotted the outer left string to the one next to it, do the same to the next string closer to the middle. Continue this process until you've reached the middle. The string you began tying with (the outermost left string) should now be in the middle.
- Begin the right side knots. From the right side, tie right knots with the outer-right strand until you reach the middle.
- To tie a right knot, do the same as the left knot but reversed. Make a ninety degree angle with the tying string over the top of the string you are tying it to and loop the tying string under the other string and pull it tight.
- Repeat these steps until the length of your design is at least 2" or longer.
- Thread the center four strings through the hole on the clay charm and secure with a knot. Tie all loose thread in a knot below the charm. Trim excess thread.
