Intermediate Weekend Project

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Sewing machine with zipper foot (for piping) and walking foot (for quilting)
  • General sewing supplies

BLANKET 1:


SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Blanket 1 (40"x 60"):
  • 2 yds patterned flannel
  • 2 yds solid flannel
  • 2 yds quilting batting

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut 41"x 61" rectangle out of all three fabrics. Lay wrong side of front fabric onto batting and baste around edges. Sew front fabric to back fabric RST with 1/2" seam allowance. Leave 5" opening for turning.
  2. Turn blanket RSO and press well. Stitch 1/4" around all edges, closing turning hole. Stitch 3 lines across width of blanket to quilt all three layers together.

BLANKET 2:


SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Blanket 2 (40"x 60"):
  • 2 yds patterned flannel
  • 1 yd flannel (for binding)
  • 2 yds solid flannel
  • 2 yds quilting batting

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut 40"x 60" rectangles out of front, back and batting fabrics. Sandwich batting between flannel fabrics, both flannels should be RSO.
  2. Baste around all edges.
  3. Stitch 3 lines across width of blanket to quilt all three layers together.
  4. Cut 220" of 5" wide bias for binding (will need to piece).
  5. Sew binding around all four sides of blanket.

CURTAINS:


SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Curtains (40"x 36"):
  • 2 yds cotton fabric

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut yardage into (2) 42" long pieces.
  2. Finish each long edge with 1/2"x 1/2" narrow hem.
  3. Finish top edge with 2" rod pocket by folding under 1/2", then fold under 2" and topstitching edge.
  4. Finish bottom edge by folding under 1/2", then folding under 5" and topstitching edge.

BANNER:


SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Banner (19 pennants, 16 ft length):
  • 2 yds flannel fabric for pennants
  • 1 yd flannel for top binding
  • 2 yds Foam Flex interfacing

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Using template, cut 19 triangles out of interfacing.
  2. Add 1/2" to each edge of template and cut 38 triangles out of flannel.
  3. Stitch triangles together in sets of two RST, on longer edges. Turn pieces right side out and place interfacing inside.
  4. Cut 12" of 2" strips for top binding on the straight grain (will need to piece).
  5. Press long edges up 1/2"
  6. Leaving 10" slack at start and finish, pin triangles along one folded edge of binding 3" apart.
  7. Fold over other edge of binding to finish top edge of pennants and topstitch.

APRON:


SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • McCall’s M6860, view A (without applique)
  • 1 yd flannel fabric (main)
  • 1/2 yd flannel fabric (pocket)
  • 3 yds 1" cotton belting

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Using M6860, cut 2A and 3A pieces out of main flannel. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for construction.
  2. Cut 25"x 17" rectangle out of pocket flannel. Fold in half RST with long edges touching. Stitch around rectangle with 1/2" seam allowance, leaving 4" hole for turning.
  3. Turn piece RSO and press well. Center pocket 6" up from bottom hem and edge stitch in place on all but top edge, closing turning hole.
  4. Create three partitions by topstitching every 6" through all layers.
  5. Finish raw edges of 1 1/2" cotton belting with narrow hems and loop belting through casings.

DOG BED:


SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1 yd flannel fabric (main)
  • 1 yd flannel fabric (piping)
  • 3 yds (8/32) cording
  • 1 medium bag of Fiberfill

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut 3 1/2 yds of 1 1/4" bias. Stitch end to end and cover cording using zipper foot to make piping.
  2. Cut two pieces, top and bottom - 16"x 16"
  3. On top piece, stitch contrasting piping around all edges. Do the same on the bottom piece.
  4. Leaving 1/2" open at top and bottom of each seam, stitch corners of seams together to form a rectangle.
  5. Matching like edges, stitch boxing strip to all four sides of top. Repeat for bottom edge, leaving 8" hole at back for turning.
  6. Turn RSO and stuff with fiberfill
  7. Slipstitch opening

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Pillowcase (for each 16", 18", 14"x 28")
  • 1 yd fabric for topper and envelope backing

16" PILLOW:


DIRECTIONS:

  1. Use template to cut pillow front and sew pillow front with 1/4" seam allowance.
  2. Cut (2) 17"x 11" rectangles for envelope back. Finish off one long edge on each rectangle with 1/2" narrow hem. Overlap finished edges to create envelope back and baste together.
  3. Sew envelope back and front RST, using 1/2" seam allowance. Turn piece RSO and press well.

18" PILLOW:


DIRECTIONS:

  1. Use template to cut pillow front and sew pillow front with 1/4" seam allowance.
  2. Cut (2) 19"x 12" rectangles for envelope back. Finish off one long edge on each rectangle with 1/2" narrow hem. Overlap finished edges to create envelope back and baste together.
  3. Sew envelope back and front RST, using 1/2" seam allowance. Turn piece RSO and press well.

14"X 28" PILLOW:


DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut (3) 28" long strips in the following widths: 6", 4", 6" (9 1/4", 3 1/2", 3 1/4" for second example) Sew strips long sides, RST, using 1/4" seam allowance.
  2. Cut (2) 15"x 17" rectangles for envelope back. Finish off one short edge of each rectangle with 1/2" narrow hem. Overlap finished edges to create envelope back and baste together.
  3. Sew envelope back and front RST, using 1/2" seam allowance. Turn piece RSO and press well.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Use zipper foot to sew close to piping. Clip into piping to place around corners.
  • Use walking foot to neatly quilt through all layers.
