Finished Quilt Size - 55" x 55"
Use a 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise noted.
  1. Print out all documents to help with quilt construction.
  2. Use the visual cut guide to prxepare all the pieces needed for the quilt.
  3. Begin the construction of the candy blocks by gathering the pieces needed according to the candy instruction document. Follow the instructions on this page to create all the necessary blocks. Press.
  4. Use the Quilt Construction document as a guide to create the diagonal strips that contain the candy pieces. This will consist of stitching together the candy blocks with the white solid 5" x 5" squares. Sew the short edges with the right sides together. The guide will show exact placement in each row.
  5. Gather all solid strips that were previously cut.
  6. Stitch together the 1 3/4" color strips in between (2) 2 1/2" white strips with the corresponding lengths (5", 7" and 15 1/2"). Use the construction guide as a reference to create all 3 block sizes and in the correct colors. Press each with seams open.
  7. Stitch each striped row together along the short edges with the right sides together. The guide will show exact placement in each row. Be careful to line up the strips correctly.
  8. There are a total of 17 rows to this diagonal quilt. Use the guide once again to determine the correct sequence of rows. It will go back and forth between candy rows and stripe rows. Stitch each row together, being careful to line up the seams. Pin the rows together to help with this. Press.
  9. Trim off all extra fabric around the edges of the quilt with the rotary cutter, making a perfect square. It will be approx. 55" x 55". The quilt top is now complete.
  10. Sandwich the backing fabric, batting and quilt top together with the right sides of the quilt facing out. Make sure all fabrics are laid out evenly and perfectly flat.
  11. Use safety pins to pin all layers together.
  12. Quilt the layers together by stitching along the top of the seam lines that run diagonally through the top (stitch in the ditch style).
  13. Create binding by cutting the 1/2" yard piece into 2 1/2" strips.
  14. Attach the binding strips together to form one long strip. This is done by stitching them together along the short edges. Do this by laying them in an L shape with the right sides together and stitching a diagonal line from the top left corner to the bottom right corner of the overlapping section. Press seams open. Repeat to attach each strip.
  15. Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise with the wrong sides together and press.
  16. To attach the binding to the quilt, line up the raw edges of the top of the quilt with the raw edges of the folded binding piece (right sides together). Leave approx. 5" of the binding undone at the start so that when finished stitching around the perimeter, some of the excess binding can be tucked into this opening. Do a final stitch over it.
  17. Fold the binding around to the back of the quilt and use needle and thread to do an invisible hand stitch around the perimeter. All raw edges are not visible, and the quilt is finished.

JOANN HACKS:

  • It's helpful to have a rotating square cutting mat and ruler to complete the triangular blocks for the sides of the candies. Make sure it has a 45-degree angle to help line up the seams accurately before trimming them.
  • If you find that your quarter square triangles move around as you cut each edge, use a piece of duct tape to keep in the middle of the cutting board and hold the piece in place.
