SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Cotton apron
- Assorted spools of ribbon
- Coordinating thread
- 1/2yd 1/4" elastic
- Basic sewing supplies
- Iron
- Coffee or tea
DIRECTIONS:
- Prewash cotton apron.
- Prepare dye bath by mixing 8oz strongly brewed coffee, or 3 black tea bags, with 4 cups of warm water in a large bowl.
- Add pre-washed, wet apron to dye bath for 5-10 minutes, stirring constantly. Once the apron has reached desired color, remove from dye bath, squeeze out excess water, and dry on high heat. Press.
- Lay ribbons out vertically with 1/2" in between. Pin in place and sew along both edges of each ribbon.
- To make the sleeve garter, cut a piece of elastic to fit the circumference of the arm it is to be worn on. Center the elastic on a length of ribbon 2-3 times longer than the elastic. Zigzag stitch along the elastic while stretching it. Trim the ribbon to the end of the elastic. Overlap the two ends of the garter and zigzag stitch together.
JOANN HACKS:
- The ribbons can be glued using hot glue or fabric glue instead of sewn in place. The apron will be stiffer than if the ribbons are sewn on.
- Use fabric dye to achieve a different/darker color on the apron.
