Intermediate Weekend Project

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Sewing machine
  • Sewing notions
  • Iron
  • Rotary cutter & cutting board
  • Marking pen
  • Quilters rule
  • 1/3 yard, 60" W x 1yd solid cotton duck canvas
  • Fabric clips
  • 1, 5/8" heavy duty snap kit
  • Hammer
  • #11 blade X-Acto Knife
  • 5 gallon bucket with handle
  • Chopstick or small dowel

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut all fabric as per template.
  2. Make bias tape, solid color fabric. Cut 2" strips, 4 @ 60", 1 @ 40". Fold in half lengthwise. Press. Fold again, sides to center. Press.
  3. Sew bias tape to top long edge of four pocket panels and top 33" edge of backing panel. Zig zag stitch bottom edge of 24 1/2" pocket panels.
  4. Inside pockets. Fold down, RST, top edge of backing panel (edge with bias tape) 5". Press. Cut short ends of folded area to match angle on backing. Baste short ends together close to edges. Mark lines for pockets. Start with a center line from folded edge to top of bias. Mark parallel lines every 3" toward the outer edges. Sew on lines. Start above the bias. Backstitch at the top and bottom. Pockets on outer edges will be smaller.
  5. Make snap tabs. RST sew 1/4" from edges leaving the straight end open to turn. Clip the edges 1/8" from seam. Turn RSO. Use chopstick or dowel to push out. Press. Zig zag open end closed. On WS of backing panel place straight end of tab 1" up and 1" in from bottom corner of 18" bottom edge. Sew 1/4" from zig zag edge of tab to attach. The tabs will be further attached after outer pockets are attached.
  6. Flip backing panel to mark for outer pockets on same side of fabric as inner pockets.
  7. Mark a line 2 1/2" up from the bottom edge of both 18" edges. This is the placement for the bottom edge of the upper pockets. Mark seam lines as per template. Mark pocket panels as per template.
  8. Baste top pocket short sides to sides of 18" backing panel, bottom edge of pockets lined up at the 2 1/2" from bottom edge mark. Match lines on pocket panel with lines on backing panel. Sew seams between pockets. Start above the bias tape. Backstitch at the top and bottom. Pleat the bottom of the pockets to flatten. Add two opposite pleats on larger pockets, one pleat on small pockets. Double stitch along the bottom edge of the pockets, 1/2" and 1/4" from zig zag edge. Repeat for other side. Repeat process for bottom pockets. Place the pocket bottom edge flush with the bottom edge of backing panel. Do not catch the snap tabs in any seams. Repeat.
  9. Attach bias tape to sides of pockets. Fold out tabs to lay behind bias tape. Catch tabs when sewing on bias tape. Sew bias tape from top of 1 1/2" curve on either side of backing panel down to the bottom edge of pockets (handle gap). Sew bias tape around inner 10" high edges with 2" curve at center of backing panel (handle gap). End bias tape at bottom edges of pockets. Attach bias tape to bottom edges of both 18" pocket panels. Fold out bias tape. Cut end to a point at the center fold. Fold end in. This will create a finished end of tape without the bulk. Sew to bottom edge. Cut and fold under when close to the end for a precise fit at the corner. Repeat.
  10. Attach snaps to tabs as per template and snap kit instructions.
  11. RST backing panel matching raw edges on sides of inner pockets. This will create a tube. Match bias tape corners and bottom of inside pocket corners. Sew 1/2" SA. Zig zag stitch raw edges together. Fold seam to one side. Press. On RS topstitch 1/4" from seam.
  12. With tube WS out place inner pocket end of tube into bucket. Roll the outer pocket end of tube over the top edge of the bucket. Place the splits between pocket panels around the handles on the bucket. Settle the top edge of the fabric around the bucket top. Snap the tabs together to secure.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Fabric inside of bucket will be loose to accommodate tools in pockets.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pattern Missing some dimensions I haven't finished this yet - just starting. But even before cutting I can see that there are a couple of items missing....However, I can't wait to get my scissors into the fabric I just bought. 1. It doesn't say anywhere how many pocket pieces to cut. If I were a novice, I would cut one pocket piece each. After reading the instructions, I believe that two of each piece should be cut. 2. How tall am I supposed to cut the pocket pieces? There is no height dimension on the pattern pieces themselves. Looks like we are shooting for 5" tall with a 1/2" seam allowance but the height dimensions are missing for the pocket pieces. I think the directions are saying we are sewing a zigzag stitch at the bottom without folding 1/2" for a seam allowance but I can't be sure.
