SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • 1/4yd 100% cotton fabric
  • 1/8yd cotton duck canvas
  • 18" fabric ties, 4
  • Soft fabric paints in assorted colors
  • Pencil or disappearing marker
  • Pattern template (download PDF under print description above)
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Download the pattern by clicking “download PDF” below Print Description on the right.
  2. Cut 1 of pattern out of Canvas- this will be the center front piece.
  3. Cut 2 of pattern out of Cotton fabric – these will be the top and bottom pieces.
  4. Cut 1 of the pattern on the fold of cotton fabric, aligning the fold with the dashed line- this will be the center piece on the inside of the mask.
  5.
  6. With right sides together, match one curved edge of the center canvas piece to the top cotton piece. Match the other curved edge of the canvas center to the bottom cotton piece right sides together. Sew both curved edges using 1/4" seam allowance.
  7. Opening these pieces, your mask should look like this – bottom cotton piece, center canvas piece, top cotton piece.
  8. Now take your final cotton piece (the one cut on the fold) and match the curved edge (opposite the fold) right sides together with the remaining curved edge of the bottom piece. Sew this curved edge using 1/4" seam allowance.
  9. Next, match the folded edge of the inside center, with the remaining curved edge of the top piece. These pieces will only match at the corners, about 1” on each side. Sew across this edge with 1/4" seam allowance. Since these pieces only match at the corners, there will be a gap in the center- this will be the opening for our pocket. The stitching that is on the top only, will be our guide for pressing in the seam allowance in a later step.
  10. Now all 4 mask pieces should be connected in a continuous loop – bottom piece, canvas center, top piece, cotton inside center and back to the bottom piece.
  11. With the mask still wrong side out, fold the mask so that the top and bottom pieces are folded in half, and the center pieces meet in the center.
  12. Match seams together at the unfinished sides, and pin. Insert ties into the center section of the mask along the seam. Sew the side seams with ¼” seam allowance.
  13. Turn mask right side out.
  14. Turn seam allowance from top flap under ¼” and edge stitch to close the opening.
  15. Fold top and bottom edge in along the curved seam and press.
  16. Top stitch around the entire mask using 1/8” seam allowance.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Make a pattern for the filter by reducing the mask pattern by 1/2" on all sides.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Pdf too small for an adults face. Super hard to do. Found a similar video on youtube. That helped me out. Because the instructions were not understandable.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Printing help :) I have made several masks from other patterns , I will try this one soon. One thing I have noticed is that I needed to print the pattern in landscape mode (long length on top and bottom), not portrait (long length on sides). Printing this way caused the pattern to be about 9"x 3 1/2". I'm going to add about 1/2" to top and bottom when I cut. Hope this helps :)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Check out the picture in the Email The pix, once you click on the link, does not show that there is a section that fits under your chin (folded cut of pattern). If you look at the picture in the email, you can just barely see the model has a bit of fabric under her chin. Seeing that makes the instructions a little less confusing. But overall, instructions need to be improved for clarity.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly written instructions - needs photos Instructions are poorly written. Re-write the pattern to improve on it, and add a video or photo tutorials for the main steps. As it is now, it is very confusing, and leaves it up to the person to fill in the blanks from previous experience/knowledge, etc. There is no size indicated for the pattern. The pattern template is small - what I have now will be just right for a child, or will just cover the lower face of an adult. There is no step about the ties, only to insert the ties into the center section, and then ... leave them there? A step on how to make the ties, or use elastic ties etc, and how to insert/place them on the pattern and where to sew them on would help.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed Read the reviews and still decided to try it for myself. Reviews are spot on .... instructions are confusing. Didn’t expect this poor quality pattern from JoAnn.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WHAT? First the instructions are very unclear and second, the pattern is way too small for an adult sized mask. It was a wonderful idea, just not executed properly.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from need a video. I can't figure out these directions. I am stuck on the part where you are sewing the pieces together. The side with folded edge should only be caught in seam1" along each side. I need visual help with this.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Confusing and frustrating There is a video for this mask with pocket as well as these instructions for the mask you can hand paint - same pattern. It is confusing to say the least. I made one, can't figure out how to fold into the final mask (and if I made a mistake somewhere in the assembling and sewing) and won't be making any more of these. Too frustrating.
