DIRECTIONS:
Cut boxes open on fold next to overlap seam. Cut out following parts.Body:
Front and back, one large side with top and bottom flaps, 34"x 36" with folds @ 9" (Cut 2)
Sides, long flap, 9"x 36" (Cut 2)
Nose:
Front and back, large side, 16"x 36" (Cut 2)
Large sides next to front and back panels: long side flaps, 9"x 36" (Cut 4)
Center sides: long side flaps, 9"x 36" (Cut 2)
Fins: large side, 16"x 36" (Cut 1 for 2 fins)
Door trim: long side, 16"x 36" (Cut 1)
Nose trim: end with top and bottom flaps: 16"x 34" (Cut three 2"x 34" strips)
Cut out cardboard parts per patterns.
Use the door trim to layout the outline of the door with the curve 31 1/2" up from the bottom edge of the front panel. Lay the left side up to the fold of the body section. This will be the hinge. Cut around the door, leaving the hinge side intact to 2' from the bottom edge. Cut out the window opening.
Fold 1 1/4" flanges on nose sections and body parts to one side of the cardboard. Fold the bottom 2" on nose sections to the same side. Press well with a pencil to indent the cardboard.
Starting at one end and pressing fingertips into line, partially fold over from one end to the other. Repeat until the flange lays on the panel. Press well.
Lay all parts back side up on a flat surface. Coat the backs of the fins with a layer of blue paint. Coat all other parts with a layer of Mod Podge or white paint. This will slightly warp the cardboard as it dries but will be corrected when the other side is coated. Let dry.
Cut out stars and door hinges: glitter foam sheets (22 -25 stars)
6 @ 2"x 6" for hinges
Cut circle window trim: neon green foam sheets:
4 for center side panels
1 for door
1 circle for door handle
Cut trim for above body blue and below fin blue:
1 1/4x 1' white (10)
1/4"x 1' black (10)
Cut flames:
Fold two sheets of orange paper in half lengthwise, cut 4 rows of flames at once (you'll need 3 sets of 4 rows). Repeat for red flames.
Flip all cardboard parts right side up. Mark a line 1' from bottom edge of all body parts. Mark a line 6" down from the points of all nose parts.
Lay nose parts next to one another as they will be assembled. Lay glitter foam stars in a random pattern on each section, avoiding the flanges and staying below the lines 6" down from the tip of the nose. Trace inside the centers of the stars. Label the sections of nose A - H. Set the stars aside in groups, labeled to correspond to the nose sections. Lay the cardboard on a cutting board and use an X-Acto knife to cut out the star centers.
Flip the nose sections right side up, flanges up. Use hot glue to attach with the flanges. Start by gluing 7 3/4" sections to either side of one large front section. Lay the first section flat and fold back the flange. Apply a bead of hot glue close to the fold and close to the cut edge. Immediately slide the part to be glued up to the first section. Line up the wide end, horizontal fold lines and hand press the flanges together. Repeat for the other sections. All will lie flat on a large surface until the last sections are attached. After glue is set, use watered down Elmers glue and 1"- 2" ripped sections of yellow construction paper to mache tip of nose to the marked line 6" below the tip.
Rip curves and spirals from white construction paper. Roll small sections of masking tape to temporarily attach paper to nose. Place paper ends close to cutout stars. These represent swirling pattern on nose and will be a guide for painting. Mache in place. Let dry.
Paint nose tip orange and star area using blue and white. When dry, use Elmers Glue All to attach silver glitter stars. Set aside.
Paint body parts, door trim and fins with blue paint. On body sections, paint two coats of blue from the bottom edges to approximately 1" below the 1' line. Do not coat the center 16" section of the front panel. On the fins, mark a line 9" up from the bottom edge. Paint two coats of blue from the top down just past the 9" line.
Paint the front and back orange approximately 1" down from the top edge to the line above the blue paint. On the front center 16" wide panel (door) paint to the bottom edge.
Paint the 2" nose trim with two coats of white paint.
Use Mod Podge to attach flames to fins. Mark a line 2 1/2" from one 12" side of yellow paper. Repeat. This is the line for the top edge of the orange paper flames. Small sections of flames will need to be cut so they extend from one side tab to the other. Apply one full sheet of yellow centered in landscape orientation, lining up the top edge with the line 9" up from the bottom edge of the fin. The line on the yellow paper should be toward the top. The bottom edge should line up with the bottom edge of cardboard. Apply the orange paper, lining up the top edge with the line on the yellow paper. Apply the red paper, lining up the top edge with the top edge of the yellow paper. Allow to dry.
Rip green construction paper into 2" wide strips. Use Mod Podge to apply horizontally to the body side sections that have window holes. Start approximately 1" from top edge and continue down to the 1' line above the blue paint. Let dry.
Use Elmers Glue All to attach silver hinge parts to left side of door frame. Bottom edge of first hinge 1" up from bottom edge of door, 2" between hinges. Attach the second set of hinges 1/4" left of the cardboard fold and at the same height as the first set of hinges. Paint white between the silver foam. Attach 1 1/4" white foam strips. Line up top edge of foam at 1' line on body sections, above the blue. Attach to fins, lining up the top edge with the top edge of the red paper flames. Attach 1/4" black trim directly under white trim. Attach door handle trim to door frame. Attach trim to all five windows and around door.
Cut out handle hole. Flip front section and cut bottom of door and door trim 1/8" up from the bottom edge. This will allow the door to swing freely.
Dry lay out foam shapes on to orange sections of body. Lay medium-size circles around door trim. Attach using Elmers Glue All. Attach pompoms along white trim: 1 1/2" on 2" trim, 1" on 1 1/4" trim and 3/4" on green side window trim. Attach colored pompoms around door window trim. No need to place one on white trim between fin tab holes. Attach with Elmers Glue All.
Attach body parts along flanges same method as nose. Final flanges attached should be toward the back. The last section glued only lay a bead of glue toward the folded edge and press together. Let the glue dry then stand the body up and lay glue from inside between the flanges.
Attach the nose to the body. Set the nose on top of the body with the 2" nose flanges outside of the body cardboard. Use hot glue to attach. Start with the large back flange. Tip the nose back to be able to press the inside and outside of the flange to the body. Line up the fold on the flange with the top edge of the body. Center the flange on the body panel. Set the nose back upright on the body and continue gluing the flanges.
Fold the fins. Place the fin tabs into the corresponding holes in the body. From the inside of the body, hot glue one set of tabs to the flange and one set fold over and hot glue to the side panel.
Hot glue the 2" white trim with pompoms on top of the nose flanges. If there are spaces between the trim sections cut 2" wide white foam to fill.
Use hot glue to attach chenille stems. Lay one on the bottom edge of the mached section at the tip of the nose. Add two other circles 2" and 4" up from the first circle. Attach chenille stems along the top edge of the 2" white trim with pompoms. Start with the center of one stem above the center of the door.
Set the body on top of the base plate. Use small strips of masking tape to hold the body in place. Use 2"x 6" strips of paper and watered down Elmers Glue to mache edges. Use two layers of paper. Let dry and repeat on the outside. Let dry and touch up the outer bottom edge with blue paint.
JOANN HACKS:
- Attach small decorations while sections lay flat.
- By adding a base the spaceship will keep the original shape and be easy to move. The side windows make great handles to pick up the ship.
- Tabs may be cut in one back flange of one green and blue side panel, with corresponding slots cut into the fold of one flange of the back panel. This may make it easier to finish attaching the body parts.
