MEASUREMENTS
Version 1: (without ties). Approx 30" [76 cm] deep x 55" [139.5 cm] wide. Version 2: (with ties). Approx 30" [76 cm] deep x 75" [190.5 cm] wide.
GAUGE
18 sts and 24 rows = 4" [10 cm] in stocking st.
Directions
Notes Shawl begins with a narrow band knit lengthwise then shawl stitches are picked up and knit downward. This keeps the top edge very soft and flexible. Knit the shorter length band for a shawl without ties or the longer length band to have ties on each end.
Top band: Cast on 5 sts. Work in garter st (knit every row) until band measures 55 (75)" [139.5 (190.5) cm]. Cast off. Version 1: Pick up and knit 182 sts along long edge of band. Version 2: Measure 10" [25 cm] from each end. PM. Pick up and knit 182 sts between markers along long edge of band. Both Versions: 1st row: (WS). Knit. 2nd row: K3. K2tog. Knit to last 5 sts. ssk. K3. 3rd row: K3. *yo. P2tog. Rep from * to last 3 sts. K3. 4th row: As 2nd row. Rep these 4 rows for pat until 8 sts rem. Next row: K2. K2tog. ssk. K2. Knit 2 rows. Cast off.
