SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Marking pen
  • Rotary cutter
  • Cutting board
  • Quilters rule
  • Sewing machine
  • High density chair pad foam, 2 pack, 3"x 15"x 17"
  • Faux leather

DIRECTIONS:

  • Lay the faux leather on the cutting board WS up. Use a Quilters rule to mark out all the parts. Cut using rotary cutter.
  • Top: 1 @ 16"x 18"
  • Bottom envelope panel: 1 @ 7"x 18", 1 @ 12"x 18"
  • Sides: 2 @ 4"x 16", 2 @ 4"x 18"
  • Ties: 4 @ 1 1/2"x 13"
  • Ties.
  • Fold the two sides of the length over each other and sew close to the raw edge. At the end, turn and sew close to the other edge. Repeat for all four.
  • On the RS of the top panel, on one 18" side, mark points 2 1/2" in from the 16" sides. Line up the outer edge of one of the ties at this mark. The second tie will set right next to the first. Line up the raw edges of the top panel and the ties. The tails of the ties will extend over the top panel. Repeat for the second set of ties on the opposite end of the 18" side of the top. Sew the ties on 1/4" from the raw edges.
  • Bottom envelope panel.
  • Lay the two panels WS up. Mark a line 1" in from one 18" edge of both panels. Fold edges over to the marks and sew close to the edge. Lay the long panel RS down on the cutting board. Lay the short panel RS down on top of the long panel, overlapping the folded edges by 2". Line up the raw edges. This should create a 16"x 18" panel. Mark the location of the folded edge of the short panel on the sides of the long panel. Sew the two panels 1/4" from the raw edges along this 2" overlap.
  • Side panels.
  • Lay the two 18" side panels WS up. Mark a square 1/2" in from the short side and 1/2" in from the long side of each corner of each panel (see photo). This provides a start and stop point for sewing the sides together.
  • Sew the short ends of the sides together 1/2" SA. Alternate 18" panel with 16" panel. Start and stop sewing 1/2" in from edges. This will create a loop.
  • Sides to top and bottom panels.
  • RST line up one length of side loop with edge of top panel. Start at corner. Sew 1/2" SA from one side seam to the other side seam. Fold back corner point and bulk of adjacent side to keep fabric flat. Do not try to turn corners when stitching. Repeat for all four sides. Repeat to attach the bottom panel. Make sure to keep the ties from catching in any seams.
  • Trim all corners to 1/8"- 1/4" from points. Angle cut away from the points to reduce bulk at corners (see photo).
  • Turn RSO. Gently push out corner points.
  • Insert a foam pad into the larger end of the envelope bottom first. Press down on the foam pad to insert into the opposite end. Hand adjust the top panel seam to lay toward the side panels and the bottom panel seam to lay toward the bottom panel.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from So-So Although I was glad to find directions to make chair cushion covers for some foam chair pads, I struggled a bit. The directions do not indicate how much fabric to buy. The directions for the side panels say "(see photo)" to illustrate a confusing bit of text, yet there is no photo except of the finished product. Uses the abbreviation SA without defining it. Is this seam allowance?
