SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 12" Cardboard Letters
  • 2 Coordinating Colors of Acrylic Paint
  • Parchment Paper
  • 1" Painter's Tape
  • Craft Knife
  • Sandpaper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors or Rotary Cutter
  • Ruler
  • Double Sided Tape
  • Medium Flat Brush
  • Clear Coat Spray (optional)
  • Meat, Cheeses, Chocolate, Fruit, Crackers

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Using a sharp craft knife, carefully cut off the top side of each letter.
  2. Remove any inner stabilizing cardboard and lightly sand the top edge of letters for a smooth edge.
  3. Paint the outside of each letter with the lighter of the two coordinating colors.
  4. NOTE: two coats may be needed - allow letter to dry thoroughly between coats.
  5. Cut 1" painter's tape into 2" strips and arrange along outside of letters 1" apart.
  6. Paint darker color in exposed areas between the pieces of tape.
  7. When dry, remove tape.
  8. Re-sand top edges if needed.
  9. Cut strips of parchment paper the inside height of the letter (approx. 1 3/8").
  10. Lay each letter right side up on a piece of parchment paper and draw a line all around the letter.
  11. Cut out the letter slightly smaller than the pencil line.
  12. Test the paper for fit and trim as needed to fit smoothly onto bottom of letter.
  13. Follow manufacturer's directions and CAREFULLY paint Diamond Dot adhesive onto the sides and about 1/8" onto the bottom - do NOT cover the entire bottom with the adhesive.
  14. NOTE: adhesive stays tacky, be careful not to get any on exposed surfaces.
  15. When adhesive has dried clear, press the bottom letter piece of parchment into bottom of letter and press edges down.
  16. Press side pieces of parchment along all of the inside walls.
  17. If desired, spray outside of letters with Clear Coat.
  18. After fully dried, fill with your favorite food elements to create a pretty presentation.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Parchment paper is made so that things will not stick to it. We found that the double sided tape worked best to smoothly secure the paper to the letter.
  • Place pieces of tape on the bottom and sides of letter.
