DIRECTIONS:
Notes:Hat is worked back and forth in rows and shaped by varying the stitch height.
Each row is worked with 2 colors of yarn to make a check pattern.
To change yarn color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete st. Proceed with new color.
Do not cut old yarn color unless instructed to do so. Carry color not in use along tops of sts of previous row and work sts of current row over the carried strand, enclosing it inside the fabric.
Sides of piece are seamed; then top edge is gathered to make the Hat.
Hat:
With A, ch 45.
Row 1: With A, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next 2 ch; * with B, dc in next 4 ch; with A, dc in next 4 ch; rep from * across - you will have six 4-st groups worked with A and five 4-st groups worked with B.
Row 2: With A, ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, sk first st, dc in next 3 sts; * with B, dc in next 4 sts; with A, dc in next 4 sts; rep from * to last 8 sts; with B, dc in next 4 sts; with A, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts.
Row 3: With B, ch 1, turn, sc in first 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts; * with A, dc in next 4 sts; with B, dc in next 4 sts; rep from * to last 8 sts; with A, dc in next 4 sts; with B, dc in next 3 sts, dc in top of beg ch - five 4-st groups worked with A and six 4-st groups worked with B.
Row 4: With B, ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, sk first st, dc in next 3 sts; * with A, dc in next 4 sts; with B, dc in next 4 sts; rep from * to last 8 sts; with A, dc in next 4 sts; with B, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts.
Row 5: With A, ch 1, turn, sc in first 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts; * with B, dc in next 4 sts; with A, dc in next 8 sts; rep from * to last 8 sts; with B, dc in next 4 sts; with A, dc in next 3 sts, dc in top of beg ch.
Rep Rows 2-5 once more, then rep Row 2.
You will have worked a total of 10 rows, ending with a Row 2.
Cut B.
Note: For the following color sections, you’ll be working 10 rows in each section. Just be sure to begin and end with the specified row.
Using C instead of B and continuing with A, beg with a Row 3, rep Rows 2-5 until you have a total of 20 rows, end with a Row 4 as the last row you work.
Cut C.
Using D instead of B and continuing with A, beg with a Row 5, rep Rows 2-5 until you have a total of 30 rows, end with a Row 2 as the last row you work.
Cut D.
Using C instead of B and continuing with A, beg with a Row 3, rep Rows 2-5 until you have a total of 40 rows, end with a Row 4 as the last row you work.
Fasten off, leaving long yarn tails.
Thread one tail in and out of ends of rows alongside edge. Pull tail to gather top of Hat and knot.
With remainder of tail, sew beg edge and ending edge together for back seam.
Finishing:
Weave in ends.
