Checkerboard Quilt

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/3yd Fabric A (Printed Cotton)
  • 1/2yd Fabric B (Contrasting Solid Cotton)
  • 1/3yd Fabric C (Contrasting Solid Cotton)
  • 1yd Backing Fabric (Cotton)
  • 28"x 28" piece of batting
  • Thread
  • Straight pins
  • Needle
  • Rotary cutter & mat
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Safety pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron
  • Pattern Templates 1, 2 & 3

DIRECTIONS:

All seams are sewn using 1/4" seam allowance
    Checkerboard:
  1. Cut (32) 2 7/8" squares from Fabric A and (32) 2 7/8" squares from Fabric B.
  2. Sew rows of 8 squares each, alternating Fabric A and Fabric B (A-B-A-B-A-B-A-B). Repeat until there are 8 rows. Press seams open.
  3. Sew all 8 rows together, rotating every other row, to create a checkerboard design. Press seams open.
  4. See Template 1.
  5. Border:
Cut (2) 1 1/2"x 19 1/2" strips from Fabric C. Sew strip of Fabric C to top and bottom of quilt. Press seams toward border fabric.
Cut (2) 1 1/2"x 22" strips from Fabric C. Sew strips to left and right side of quilt. Press seams to border fabric.
Cut (2) 1 1/2"x 22" Strips from Fabric B. Sew strips to top and bottom of quilt. Press seams toward Fabric B.
Cut (2) 1 1/2"x 24 1/2" Strips from Fabric B. Sew strips to left and right of quilt. Press seams toward Fabric B.
  6. Layer backing fabric, then the batting, and quilt top. The backing and batting should extend 3-4" all around the edge of the quilt top. Smooth out any wrinkles. Pin all three layers together with safety pins to hold together while quilting.
  7. Quilting:
  8. Machine or hand quilt along all seams (quilting in the ditch) and diagonally in the checkerboard block, creating an "X" in each square.
  9. Trim away excess batting and backing fabric, squaring quilt as necessary. Quilt should measure 24"x 24".
  10. Binding:
  11. Cut (2) 2 1/4" strips X width of fabric from Fabric C. Sew strips together by placing ends perpendicular to one another and sewing on the diagonal to create enough length to go around the perimeter of the quilt. Trim to 1/4" seam allowance and press open. See Template 2.
  12. Fold this strip in half and press to create a 1 1/8" wide strip.
  13. Leaving a 6" tail of binding, start in the middle of one side of the quilt, pin and sew binding to quilt front, lining up raw edge of binding to raw edge of quilt. As you approach the first corner, stop 1/4" from the edge of the quilt, backstitch, and remove quilt from machine.
  14. Fold the unsewn length of binding up perpendicular to the seam just sewn, creating a 45 degree fold at the corner. See Template 3-A.
  15. Next, fold the unsewn length of binding down so that the fold is even with the raw edge of quilt and binding previously sewn. See Template 3-B.
  16. Beginning at the corner just folded, pin binding in place along raw edge of quilt. Take a few stitches and backstitch in place. Continue sewing binding in place until the next corner is reached. Repeat process above for each corner. Stop 6" from the beginning seam of binding.
  17. Unfold the two tails of binding fabric. Fit remaining binding ends to quilt by sewing binding ends together on a diagonal as when you sewed the binding strips together, making sure to remove any excess in the process. Trim excess, leaving 1/4" seam allowances. Fold binding in half along established crease and finish sewing into place.
  18. Fold binding over raw edge of quilt, and hand stitch into place on the back side of quilt. At each corner, tuck excess binding under to create a 45 degree mitered corner.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Use masking tape or painter’s tape as a guide for quilting diagonal lines or lines that do not fall on the seams of the quilt.
