DIRECTIONS:

INSTRUCTIONS TO ADD A LINING TO AN UNLINED HOODED ROBE:
  1. Use pattern pieces 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, and 21 for both print and solid fabric with the following changes. Cut pieces 15, 17 and 18 5/8" shorter at the hemline. Pieces 16 and 21 are cut from print only. Trim 1/2" along the straight edge of hood piece 19. Interfacing: piece 21.
  2. Beginning with print fabric, follow construction steps 1-6 for robe E. Skip step 7, sleeve hem.
  3. Step 8, sew center back seam of hood. Skip step 9
  4. Step 10, SEW hood to robe rather than baste. Skip steps 11-16.
  5. Iron interfacing to belt sections. Follow steps 17-19 to construct and attach the belt. Set printed robe aside.
  6. Construct the lining as for print, omitting pockets and belt. (See Photo)
  7. Pin right sides of robe and lining together. Beginning at a side seam, sew a 5/8" seam around the outer edges of robe, matching seams and leaving the back open at the hem between side seams. Do not catch the belt in the seam. Trim bottom corners. Turn right side out and push out corners neatly.
  8. Understitch the seam as follows: Working through the bottom opening, hold the seam allowance toward the lining and stitch on the right side of the lining 1/8" from the seam line. (See Photo) Get as close to the corners as possible. Insert the lining sleeves into the print sleeves.
  9. Finish sleeve hem and back hem: Fold 5/8" to the inside on both lining and print fabric and slip stitch closed.

Craft Hack Tips and Tricks:

  • If your plush fabric has nap (feels smooth when brushed in one direction) cut with the smooth side running down and use the cutting layout for napped fabric. The shorter, velvety side is the right side.
  • Using two different fabric types may cause slippage during sewing. It helps to use clips or pin parallel to the edge rather than at right angles. Using a stylus to hold the fabric as it nears the presser foot may also help.
  • Understitching the seam allowance to the lining will prevent the robe edge from rolling out.
  • Turn the belt carefully as the fabric will stretch and the stitching may break. It may help to use a narrow zigzag or a serger instead of a straight stitch.
