SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/4 yd Assorted Fabrics, Colors of Choice
  • Simplicity® Pattern #9199
  • Matching Thread
  • Scissors or Rotary Cutter
  • Pins
  • Tape Measure
  • Clear Grid or Ruler

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Using skirt pattern pieces for View A- determine size needed.
  2. To determine size of squares- Draw a line at bottom hem on pattern piece. Subtract 2" for border and divide remaining length by 2, then add 1/2" to that measurement for 1/4" seam allowance. (for a size six, that measurement was 5 1/2")
  3. Cut 5 1/2" squares needed for skirt, over cut number of squares, easier to determine layout if you have extra squares-( for a size 6, 24 squares were needed.
  4. Layout square to best determine layout and color combination that looks good to you.
  5. Sew squares together in horizonal length using 1/4" seam allowance. Make two continuous strips from Center Back seam to Center Back seam. Serge seam for clean finish.
  6. Join 2 long strip together using 1/4" seam allowance and serge seam.
  7. For bottom border strip, cut a piece 5' by length of patchwork strip.
  8. Fold in half and stitch to patchwork strip using 1/4" seam allowance.
  9. Tape together skirt pattern pieces #1 and #2, eliminating seam allowance at side seam.
  10. Use just made patchwork strip with border to cut combined skirt piece (#1 and #2), leaving opening at center back.
  11. Stitch center back seam below notch, back stitching at notch to reinforce.
  12. Continue with Step # 10 in Simplicity pattern instructions and complete your skirt following remaining instructions for View A.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Use combination of random or set pattern to make patchwork.
  • No need to hem with border already creates finished hem.
  • Make a coordinating top using same process, or only using one or two of the fabrics.
