SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Clementine quilted square fabric - 1 yard
- Backing fabric - 1 yard
- Binding fabric - 1/2 yard
- Batting - 36"x 36"
- Scissors
- Rotary cutter and ruler
- Safety pins
- Needle and thread
- Iron
DIRECTIONS:
- Cut square clementine fabric for the top piece of your quilt. The finished size of this quilt is a little smaller than 36"x 36". You will want to measure it out and make sure to cut along the edge of a section of squares. This will keep it balanced/even. For the quilt shown, this was 7 squares by 7 squares.
- Cut backing fabric to approx. 36"x 36".
- Cut batting fabric to approx. 36"x 36".
- Cut (4) 2.5" strips of binding fabric.
- Sandwich top, batting and backing pieces together to form the quilt and baste together with safety pins.
- Quilt horizontal and vertical lines along each side of the seams of the squares.
- Cut off any excess fabric or batting to clean up the final square shaped quilt.
- Create the binding strips by diagonally sewing the 4 strips together along the short edges. Trim the diagonal seams. Then fold the entire strip in half with the wrong sides together. Press.
- Stitch binding around the edge of the quilt, right sides together on the top piece, using a 1/4" seam allowance and mitering the corners as you go.
- Fold binding around to the back of the quilt to cover the raw edges. Hand sew an invisible stitch around the entire perimeter of the back.
JOANN HACKS:
- When quilting the layers together, it’s helpful to line up your presser foot with the seam lines. This helps you create clean, straight lines as you go back and forth along the top of the quilt.
