SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • McCalls pattern 8053
  • Main Color Fabric (see pattern envelope)
  • 1 yard Contrast Fabric for Color Blocks
  • 1 1/2 yard Pellon Tru-Grid for making dress front pattern
  • Highlighter
  • Pen or marker
  • Ruler

DIRECTIONS:
  1. McCalls 8053 pullover dress includes two pattern pieces for the front. For this project, use View B (no bust darts). Cut out the front piece in the size needed and use a dry iron to remove wrinkles.
  2. Place the pattern under the Pellon Tru-Grid, with the side seam of the front toward an edge and the center fold line along a vertical line of the grid. Pin in place and trace with a marker or pen. Mark notches or circles. Unpin and flip the pattern to trace the other half of the front, matching the center fold line. Pin, trace edges and mark notches and circles. Remove pattern.
  3. Using the printed grid lines and a ruler, draw a vertical line from the neckline to the hem about two thirds from one side. Next draw two horizontal lines across front, dividing the length in thirds. Label each piece either “main color” or “contrast” as desired. See project photo for reference.
  4. Use a highlighter to draw along each side of every horizontal and vertical line. NOTE: Before cutting pieces apart, make notes or symbols to show which pieces will be sewn back together. Cut on the highlighted lines to separate the six pieces.
  5. Use marked pattern pieces to cut either the main color or contrast. NOTE: Cut only one of each pattern piece, have material RIGHT side up, make sure the vertical grid is parallel to the selvedge (woven edge) and ADD 1/2” TO EVERY HIGHLIGHTED EDGE.
  6. Using the markings, sew pieces back together, right sides together in an 1/2” seam. TIP: Sew the horizontal seams first, then one long vertical seam. Take care in matching seams. Press the seam allowances to opposite sides and “nest” together before sewing. Finish seam allowances if desired.
  7. Finish dress per pattern instructions.
