SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Rit All-Purpose Liquid Dye: Hyacinth, Petal Pink
  • Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative
  • Cotton White Denim
  • Wide Paintbrush
  • Measuring Cup and Spoon
  • Paper Towels
  • Gloves
  • Dish Detergent
  • Salt

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Prewash denim in warm, soapy water. This helps to remove any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption. Leave damp and set aside.
  2. Wearing rubber gloves, create a 3 gallon dyebath with 1/2 cup of Petal Pink and repeat to create a separate 3 gallon dyebath with 1/2 cup of Hyacinth.
  3. Add 1/2 cup of salt to each dyebath and stir.
  4. Carefully dip one leg into the Petal Pink dyebath until you meet the center seam of the denim. Remember to start with the lightest color first.
  5. Next, carefully dip the other leg into the Hyacinth dyebath until you meet the center seam. Once done, set aside.
  6. Dip the wide paintbrush into each dyebath and paint along the center seam to create a clean line.
  7. To set the dye, apply Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative with a squeeze bottle, which will enhance the colors and reduce bleeding. Mix 2 tablespoons of well-shaken ColorStay Dye Fixative with water and apply liberally to both sides of the fabric.
  8. Rinse in cool water until rinse water begins to run clear. This is very important to prevent unabsorbed dye from bleeding into any other areas.
  9. Wash in cold water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry.
