DIRECTIONS:
- Cornice construction for walls with studs 16" oc. Cornice and drapes for a twin bed. Drape should fall behind a headboard for less stress on fabric drapes.
- Determine desired height of top of cornice. 1 5/8" screws will be set through the top of the cornice into the support 2 x 4 attached to the wall. Leave enough space between the ceiling and the top of the cornice to accommodate the use of a screwdriver or drill. Measure overall length from the top of the 11" H cornice to desired fall behind bed.
- Cut 1 x 4 Pine: 2 at 10 1/4", 1 at 1' 10", 2 at 3 1/2"
- Set two 10 1/4" and one 1'10" on long edges overlapping longer board ends over shorter boards ends. Place plywood on top matching corners. Use 1 1/2" screws to attach plywood to 1 x 4 frame. Three screws through each side and five screws along the top. Keep joints flush. Turn box so the open 1 x 4 side is down. Set two 1 1/2" screws through top 1 x 4 into side 1 x 4. Repeat. Side of plywood without 1 x 4 will be the bottom of the cornice.
- Set cornice on a flat surface plywood down. Attach one corner brace from plywood to 10 1/4" side 1 x 4, 6" up from bottom edge. Use screws provided to screw into 1 x 4. Use 1/2" screws to screw into plywood. Repeat.
- Attach two corner braces from plywood to 1' 10" top 1 x 4, 6" in from inside corners. Sand any rough edges on cornice if necessary.
- Mark points on top of cornice to pre-drill three holes for 1 5/8" screws: 1" from open back, one centered and one on either side 6" from center.
- Mark 2 x 4 for four 3" screws, 16" oc.
- On one side of 3 1/2" square 1 x 4 pine draw diagonal lines. The intersection of the lines will be center. Drill a 1/2" hole through pine. Repeat. Test fit 1/2" dowel into holes. Drill two holes for 1 1/2" screws 1" in from corners on one diagonal line. Set aside.
- Cut batting and fabric for cornice. Center print on fabric dropping center of height down by 1/4" (wrap around top 1/4" more than wrap around to back of bottom edge). Place batting on a flat surface. Mark lines on inside of cornice, 1" up from bottom edge of plywood and 1" up form bottom edge of 1 x 4 sides. On top of cornice mark lines 2" in from plywood front and 1 x 4 sides. Place the batting to wrap the cornice and end at all marks inside and on top of cornice. Attach batting to wood using 1/2" staples in staple gun. Use a minimal number of staples since the fabric will layer over the batting. Reduce bulk at corners by cutting back layered batting without exposing wood.
- Press fabric for cornice. Fold all sides back 1/2". Press. Attach to cornice same as batting except with staples close together. Keep staples close to edges of fabric. Miter corners. Avoid any distortion of the print by checking the front of the cornice as the fabric is being stretched to staple.
- Cut drapes: Center drape = 54" W x overall length of canopy minus 6 1/2" H.
- Side drapes (2) = 20" W x center drape length minus 3 3/8".
- Center drape: Fold sides 1/2" RST then 1/2" again. Press. Sew close to fold. Fold top 1/2" RST then fold 1 1/4". Press. Sew close to fold. This creates the channel for the 1/2" dowel. Fold bottom 1/2" RST then fold 2 1/4". Press. Sew close to fold. This creates the channel for the 3/4" PVC pipe. Set aside.
- Side drapes: Fold sides 1/2" RST then 1/2" again. Sew close to fold. Repeat. Fold bottom 1/2" RST then fold 2 1/4". Sew close to fold. Repeat. This creates the channel for the 3/4" PVC pipe. Fold 1" pleats along the top edge to bring the fabric W to 6 1/2". Press pleats down 2" from top edge. Sew to set pleats 1/2" from top edge. Press top edge to RS of drape.
- On the inside of one side of the cornice mark a line 2 1/2" up from the bottom edge continuing 3" onto the plywood. Repeat for opposite side. Place the folded/pleated edge of side drape flush with the line. RS of fabric toward back of cornice. Staple in place through and slightly below the folded edge of drape. Repeat.
- Slide the center drape onto the dowel rod. Place the 3 1/2" pine squares onto the ends of dowel. Place the RS of center drape onto the back of the cornice. The top of the pine squares should lay flush against the edges of the side braces and the bottom edge flush with the top edge of the side drapes. Screw 3 1/2" pine squares to sides of cornice through pre-drilled holes using 1 1/2" screws.
- Attach 2 x 4 to wall to studs. Mark a level line between studs. Pre-drill holes in 2 x 4. Screw two 3" screws through 2 x 4 into each stud. Pre-set 1 5/8" screws into three holes through the top of the cornice. Set the cornice over the 2 x 4 pressing the cornice flush to the wall. Drive the screws through the top of the cornice into the 2 x 4.
- Settle the drapes. Slide the PVC pipe through the bottom channel of the drapes. Tuck the side seam of side drape into the end of the pipe. Press a PVC cap into the end of pipe. This will keep the fabric from shifting. Repeat.
