Beginner 1-2 Hours

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Lampshade
  • Kraft paper or newsprint
  • Pencil
  • Rotary cutter, cutting mat & straightedge (or scissors)
  • Spray adhesive
  • Cotton fabric
  • Iron
  • Double fold bias tape
  • Sewing clips

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Create a pattern by laying the lamp shade down on the kraft paper and, starting and ending at the seam, roll it across the kraft paper, tracing the edges with your pencil as you go. It will create an arc shape. Add 1/2" to one of the seamed ends.
  2. Cut out pattern and check its sizing on top of the lamp shade.
  3. Pin pattern piece to cotton fabric and cut it out. Iron fabric flat. Fold one short end of the fabric in 1/2" and press flat with iron. This will be a seam.
  4. Cover a spray area with newsprint or kraft paper and spray entire outside surface of the lampshade with spray adhesive.
  5. Carefully line up unfolded end of fabric with line of seam on lampshade, and slowly wrap around the lampshade, making sure the edges line up as you wrap around.
  6. When you reach the end, lightly spray adhesive onto the seam overlap area, and press folded edge into adhesive.
  7. Add bias tape onto the top and bottom edges of the lampshade. Wrap bias tape around the top and bottom of the shade and cut a little more than you will need to cover it. Lightly spray adhesive onto the top of the lampshade. Starting at the seam, center the bias tape over the top of the shade, pulling the folded edges down equally over the front and back of the shade. Continue to wrap all the way around. At the end, cut the bias tape into a point (to make it less bulky) and fold to create a crisp end. Spray a little adhesive at the end, and press down. Secure the bias tape all the way around with sewing clips, to keep it tight while it dries.
  8. Repeat the entire bias tape process for the bottom of the lampshade.
