Cotton Lunch Sacks

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 100% Cotton Fabric (1/2yd per sack)
  • 100% Coordinating Cotton Fabric for Lining and Trim (1/2yd per sack)
  • 1/2yd Fusible Interfacing, Intermediate Weight (per sack)
  • Basic Sewing Supplies
  • Rotary Cutter, Mat and Ruler
  • 3/4" Button

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut 1 rectangle 22"x 16" from cotton fabric for outer fabric.
  2. Cut 1 rectangle 22"x 16" from cotton fabric for lining.
  3. Cut 1 rectangle 22"x 16" from interfacing and attach to outer fabric per directions on interfacing.
  4. Cut and make bias tape from a 2"x 25" piece of coordinating fabric.
  5. Cut a 2"x 4" piece for the loop. Fold the 4" edges in the to meet in the center. Fold again in half and stitch along the open edge. Set aside.
  6. Fold the outer rectangle right sides together, matching the 16" edges. Sew along the 16" side using 1/2" seam allowance. Repeat with the lining fabric and press all seams open.
  7. Sew across the bottom, 11" edge of sack, starting from seam edge.
  8. Box the bottom corners of the sack. To box the corners, open out each corner to create a triangle matching the side seam and bottom seam to create bottom of sack. Measure 1 1/2" from the point of the triangle and draw a straight line across the corner. Sew on the line and trim excess fabric from the corner.
  9. Repeat with lining fabric.
  10. Place lining fabric inside outer sack with wrong sides together, matching side seams. Pin and baste upper edge.
  11. Using a ruler, measure 1/2" from side seam and mark at top of sack, draw a straight line with a marking pen to the bottom of the bag, repeat for all 4 sides of bag to create stitching lines.
  12. Press the line to create crease and sew 1/8" from edge to create definition on the sack and to help it hold shape.
  13. Press the bottom edge of the sack and sew 1/8" from edge also.
  14. Attach bias loop to center of sack at top with loop facing down using 1/4" seam allowance.
  15. Pin and sew bias tape around top edge of sack, folding up the loop to catch in the seam and folding under where the bias tape meets end to finish.
  16. Fold top of sack over 3" and mark for button placement.
  17. Sew button on front of bag.
