NOTE: Finished size is approx. 30 1/2"x 20 1/2"
- Cut the piece of fabric to 36"x 44".
- Along the 44" edge of the fabric, fold in toward the wrong side of the fabric 1/2" and press.
- Fold an additional 4" from the folded edge and press again.
- Unfold the fabric and re-fold by matching up the 36" sides (with the right sides together).
- Pin along the side and bottom.
- Using a 1/2" seam allowance, sew down the side and bottom of the pillowcase (if you need to go in a bit more with your seam allowance because of the fabric salvage that is fine).
- Fold right side out.
- Use the previously folded 4" line, fold the cuff into the pillowcase form and pin down inside. Make sure the first 1/2" fold you created is tucked under and all the raw edges are hidden as you pin.
- Along the inner 1/2" fold line, sew a straight stitch approx. 1/4" away around the entire perimeter of the pillow case. Backstitch.
NOTE: Finished size is approx. 31 1/2"x 20 1/2"
- Fold the 2" trim and 9" cuff fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides of the fabric facing out and press.
- Open the 9" cuff piece with the right sides of the fabric facing up on your workspace.
- Pin the folded 2" trim to the top edge of the cuff along the 44" edge, lining up the raw edges.
- Grab the large main pillow fabric and line this up on top of the others with the 44" raw edge. Re-pin with all layers included.
- Roll up the main fabric from the bottom, rolling up toward the line of pins to get it out of the way (but don't cover the pins).
- You will now be able to see the bottom edge of the cuff fabric. Fold this up around the roll of fabric and line it up with the layers of raw edges you already have pinned. Re-pin to include this final layer.
- Sew down the pinned edge using a 1/2" seam allowance. (Make sure the rolled pillow fabric doesn't get caught in your stitches).
- Pull the pillowcase out of the rolled tube.
- Clean up the side edges with the rotary cutter to make everything even and press flat.
- Fold the fabric by matching up the 36" sides with the right sides together.
- Pin along the side and bottom.
- Using a 1/2" seam allowance, sew down each side.
- Fold right side out.
NOTE: Finished size is approx. 31 1/2"x 20 1/2"
- Lay out the large 28"x 44" fabric piece on your work surface.
- Fold this piece in half widthwise making sure the right sides are together.
- Pin along one long side and one short side.
- Sew along both edges with a 1/2" seam allowance. Flip right side out. Set aside.
- Grab your ruffle pieces and layer the 2 pieces of fabric with the right sides together.
- Pin them together along the short edge and sew using a 1/2" seam allowance. This will create one long strip for the ruffle.
- Lay the ruffle strip wrong side up on your work surface and fold in half lengthwise, matching raw edges. Pin.
- Approx. 1/4" from the pinned edge, sew a basting stitch.
- To make it a little easier to gather the ruffles together, place a pin right in the middle of the strip and work your way down each side from the edge to the pin.
- Pull the basting threads slowly and gather to bunch the fabric together and create the ruffles.
- Once you have a majority of it bunched, lay it alongside the edge of your pillowcase to make sure you made it the correct length. You will probably need to adjust both sides to make sure each is approx. 22" long.
- Once both sides of the ruffle are at your desired length, sew the short sides of the ruffle strips together using a 1/2" seam allowance to create a loop (right sides together).
- To connect the pillowcase to the ruffle, tuck the body of the pillowcase (right side facing out) into the loop of the ruffle (right side facing down) and line up the raw edges.
- Make sure you line up the side seam of the ruffle loop with the side seam of the pillowcase and pin all the way around.
- Sew in approx. 1/2", making sure it will hide the basting stitch.
- Press the ruffle down and flat.
- Top stitch along the ruffle seam to keep the inner seam allowance secure and flat.
NOTE: Finished size is approx. 31 1/2"x 20 1/2"
- Start by preparing your bias tape strips. Cut 2" strips diagonally down your 1/2yd piece of binding fabric. This will give it the stretch it needs to make it around the scallops.
- To make it long enough you will need to sew several strips together to form one long strip that is approx. 55" long. This is done by stitching them together along the short edges. Do this by laying them in an L shape with the right sides together and stitching a diagonal line from the top left corner to the bottom right corner of the overlapping section. Trim off excess fabric. Press seams open.
- Once you have your long bias strip created, fold the strip in half lengthwise with the wrong sides together and press. Set aside.
- Lay out the large 28"x 44" fabric piece on your work surface.
- Fold this piece in half widthwise making sure the right sides are together.
- Pin along one long side and one short side.
- Sew along both edges with a 1/2" seam allowance. Flip right side out.
- Collect your two 5" strips and print out (if the sizing is correct) or re-create the attached scallop pattern piece.
- Lay the 5" strips down on your work surface layered on top of each other with the right sides of the fabric facing out. Pin together.
- Line up the pattern piece along the bottom edge of the strips and trace the top of the scallops along the entire length, careful to line everything up correctly as you move the pattern piece along. Sew down the traced scallop line.
- Cut excess fabric on top of the scallop line down to about 1/4".
- Bring the short sides of the scallop strip together and sew 1/2" seam allowance to create a loop.
- Turn the scalloped loop right side out and collect your previously created bias tape.
- Line up the raw edges of the right side of your scallop strip with the raw edges of the bias tape and pin. It will take some maneuvering, pulling, snaking to get the edges to line up. You may even need to clip a little of the raw edge of the bias tape to round the corners and make it smooth and flat.
- Start 2" in from the short edge of the bias tape and sew them together a little more than 1/4" from the raw long edge (to hide the previous seams). Take your time to make sure the fabric isn't bunching. When you get to the end you have the 2" left open from the start. Fold the 2" down about 1" and tuck the other open end into it. (you will probably need to cut it down to fit). Then finish stitching over it and close everything up.
- Fold the bias tape over the raw edge to the inside and hand sew an invisible stitch along the entire perimeter.
- Next, to connect the pillowcase to the scallop looped piece, tuck the body of the pillowcase (right side facing out) into the loop (right side facing down) and line up the raw edges.
- Make sure you line up the side seam of the scallop loop with the side seam of the pillowcase and pin all the way around.
- Sew together using a 1/2" seam allowance.
- Press the scallop piece down flat.
- Top stitch along the seam to keep everything secure and flat.
JOANN HACKS:
- If you want the inner side seams of the pillowcases to have a more finished feel to them, you can do a zig-zag stitch along them, but it is not necessary.
- Clip the extra fabric off the inside corners of your pillowcases so that it's easier to get them pointed and crisp.
