Beginner Under 1 Hour
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • 100% cotton fabric
  • 100% coordinating cotton fabric
  • 1/4" elastic
  • Pattern template (download PDF)
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Rotary cutter & mat

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Using a rotary cutter, cut two downloaded pattern pieces for the exterior of the mask, and two pattern pieces for the lining.
  2. With right sides together, stitch along the curved edge only for the exterior pieces and then the lining pieces.
  3. Clip the curves and press the seam to one side for both the exterior and lining pieces.
  4. Layer the exterior and lining pieces together, right sides together, matching up the edges. Pin the pieces in place along the edges.
  5. Stitch along the top and bottom edges of the layered pieces with ¼” seam allowance, leaving both short ends unstitched.
  6. Flip the newly joined pieces right side out and press.
  7. Top stitch along the top and bottom edges of the mask 1/8” from the edges.
  8. To create the casing for the ties, fold down the unstitched ends 1/4” one time, and then fold another 1/4" to hide the raw edge. Pin or clip in place then top stitch close to the inside edge of the fold.
  9. Use a safety pin to feed bias ties or elastic loops through the newly created casing. Knot the ends of the bias ties to keep them from coming out of the casing. If using elastic, knot it to your comfort level where it would loop behind your ear, then slide the knotted part of the elastic into the casing to hide it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of time printing The header was for a cotton shaped face mask with bias tape ties, instructions were for a regular mask using elastic. Did not get the pattern in the download, complete waste of time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wish I Read Reviews First YIKES, I should have realized something was wrong when I saw elastic in the list of materials. Wish I would have read the reviews first. Would love to see the correct directions for this mask.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible Directions The patterns are no where near the sized indicated, much less the sizes needed. Please revamp and re-issue this as it is a good idea for a person that has sore ears!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wrong directions uploaded from JoAnn Fabrics? JoAnn Fabrics, confused. The title says “bias ties” and the directions indicate elastic. What is it?
Date published: 2021-01-16
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Directions do not match project title. Wrong directions. In general, Joann directions are not useable by a beginner. If you want to encourage people to take up sewing, it would help to not have shorthand directions not useful for those with limited sewing experience. Especially true if when encouraging mask-sewing. I’d like to see the directions for making bias ties.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wrong instructions - pattern not to size the instructions do not go with the pattern - which, by the way, is not correctly sized
Date published: 2021-01-16
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not right pattern pictured Not the right pattern for the instructions. Pattern comes out way smaller. Someone should look over patterns before posting.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wrong pattern I printed the instructions, they do NOT match the pattern. The pattern would not print true size. I wasted paper, ink, and my time.
Date published: 2021-01-16
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wrong instructions Where’s the bias tape? You have elastic instructions.
Date published: 2021-01-16
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pattern pieces Where are the pattern pieces? The instructions mention them but they are no where to be found.
Date published: 2021-01-16
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Zero stars these are not the instructions for the pictured mask.
Date published: 2021-01-16
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Incorrect directions Pretty sure the directions are for a different project
Date published: 2021-01-16
Rated 1 out of 5 by from DISAPPOINTED! There are instructions that do not fit the mask shown. The pattern is not scaled to download. It comes out smaller than the measurements.
Date published: 2021-01-16
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Pattern Issues The pattern prints at a bit under 1/2 scale even when you set the printer to 100%. Directions are for a quilted mask with elastic ear ties and not the one in the photo. Only one mask should print per page and that would rectify the issue.
Date published: 2021-01-16
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Correct instructions for picture?? Where is there a "patchwork" design on this mask? And no elastic in the pictured mask! I think you have wrong instructions for the pictured mask!!
