To find the downloadable patterns click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.

STORAGE BAG:
  1. Cut out material following the Storage Bag Template.
  2. Baste the batting to the wrong side of the cotton. Set aside.
  3. Place 1" squares on the zipper ends. The squares will be on top of the zipper with one edge of the square 1/4" below the end of the zipper. Sew end with zipper foot. Repeat process on the other side of the zipper for the lining zipper end covers. Press seams down with iron. Set aside.
  4. With right sides together, attach Top to Back.
  5. With right sides together, attach Bottom to Back. Set aside.
  6. Center the top of the zipper onto the Top Front. Place right sides together and pin into place. Taper in the excess zipper material on the top of the zipper, and sew with zipper foot.
  7. Center the top of the remaining zipper onto the Top Front. Pin and sew as before.
  8. Match Bottom Front to remaining zipper edges, right sides together. Taper in the excess zipper material, pin, and sew into place with zipper foot.
  9. With right sides together, attach Front sides to Back, Front to Top, and Front to Bottom. Set aside.
  10. Fold in long edges of lining Top Front and Bottom Front 1/4" and press with iron. Repeat the process for the lining as if making a second storage bag.
  11. Keep lining wrong side out and place inside of storage bag. Pin in place along zipper edge and sew all the way around with zipper foot.

FLAT ZIP POUCH:
  1. Cut two rectangles out of the cotton, the lining, and the interfacing.
  2. Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the cotton.
  3. Turn one cotton piece right side up, place the closed zipper right side down, matching to long edge.
  4. Sew the zipper to the fabric, using the zipper foot on your sewing machine. Stop sewing before you reach the zipper pull; unzip the zipper so that the zipper pull is out of the way of the sewing machine's foot, and continue sewing the rest of the way across the zipper.
  5. Open out the zipper and press seam with iron; then set the piece down, wrong-side up.
  6. Match the remaining zipper edge to the remaining cotton piece, right sides together. Sew the zipper as before. Open and press with the iron.
  7. Set aside.
  8. Fold the top edge of a lining piece in 1/4" and press it with the iron. Repeat for second lining piece.
  9. With the lining pieces right-side up and exterior piece wrong-side up, align linings' folded edges to zipper.
  10. Pin in place and turn to the exterior right side and sew along the zipper with the zipper foot. Move the zipper pull out of the way to finish your sewn line.
  11. Next you will be sewing the exterior pouch together and the lining pouch together. It is like sewing two pouches that are connected by the zipper.
  12. Open the zipper up about 3/4 of the way (enough to be open and able to turn right-side out once sewn, but with the zipper pull well out of the way of the sewing machine foot).
  13. With the zipper at the center, flip over the fabrics so that the two lining pieces are on one side, right sides together, and the two exterior pieces are on the other side, right sides together.
  14. Fold the zipper teeth toward the lining and pin.
  15. Match up all sides and pin.
  16. Sew all the way around, leaving an opening at the bottom of the lining for turning.
  17. Cut the excess material off of all the corners, making sure not to cut through the stitching.
  18. Turn the pouch so that both the exterior and lining are right-side out, and press all edges with the iron. Sew the open edge of the lining, then push into the bag.

BOX POUCH:
  1. Cut out material following the Box Pouch Template.
  2. Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the cotton. Set aside.
  3. Place 1" squares on the zipper ends. The squares will be on top of the zipper with one edge of the square 1/4" below the end of the zipper. Sew end with zipper foot. Repeat process on the other side of the zipper for the lining zipper end covers. Press seams down with iron. Set aside.
  4. Fold in outer edges of exterior box pouch, right side out (see template).
  5. Place the closed zipper right side down along one long edge.
  6. Sew the zipper to the fabric, using the zipper foot on your sewing machine. Stop sewing before you reach the zipper pull. Unzip the zipper so that the zipper pull is out of the way of the sewing machine's foot, and continue sewing the rest of the way across the zipper.
  7. Open out the zipper and press seam with iron.
  8. Match the remaining zipper edge to the opposite edge, right sides together. Sew the zipper as before. Open and press with the iron.
  9. Turn Box Pouch so that right sides are together and flatten with the zipper centered.
  10. Sew edges below zipper ends (see template).
  11. Construct handle - fuse interfacing to wrong side of one cotton piece. Place both cotton pieces right sides together and sew down long side. Turn right side out with a safety pin and press with iron.
  12. Baste short edges on right side of box pouch, underneath the zipper. Turn wrong-side out again.
  13. Fold in side edges and sew (see template).
  14. Trim excess material from seam allowances at corners.
  15. Flip right side out.
  16. Fold in outer edges of lining 1/4" and press with iron. Repeat the process for the lining as if making a second box pouch.
  17. Keep lining wrong-side out and place inside of box pouch. Hand stitch interior lining in place along the interior zipper edge.

JOANN HACKS:
  • For Storage Bag: Cut the Front Top and Bottom Top pieces on the bias to help them to stretch along the corner curves, for a creaseless construction.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your time Like others, this is so wordy without any illustrations/visuals. There are so many other options for making zipper pouches, avoid this one!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cool project but…needs visuals Advanced sewist here. This project is a relatively easy one for beginners until they get to the zipper. The written instructions are not sufficient for new, beginners, intermediate sexists. Either include photos, diagrams or a short video. Sewing in a zipper isn’t intuitive or something that can be easily illustrated with words only. Simple fix for this tutorial, though, add visuals.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from We're the video? Weekly flyer has this project listed with a video. I agree the instructions are too vague without a video or pictures in the instructions. COME ON JOANN! YOU COULD DO SO MUCH BETTER!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great idea; poor execution. “Storage Bag Template”…? Did I miss something? It’s a fabric rectangle-just give cutting dimensions. There are better tutorials on the web, especially concerning zipper tab construction.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Missing more detailed/illustrated instructions I sew many pouches. The only way I learned was watching step by step videos. For those of you that are a 1st time pouch sewer, these instructions are not detailed enough.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So cute! Just take your time. I'm not a seamstress and could follow instructions just fine. Thank you for the patterns and projects!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Zipper bags No photos on the instructions, hard to follow unless someone is a seamstress. Your basically on your own.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Visual instruction I'm more of a visual learner, so I'm glad YouTube has free videos on how to make zipper bags :)
