Cricut Whale Tape Dispenser

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/16" Basswood
  • Everyday Iron-On, Black
  • 12" x 12" Cricut® StrongGrip Machine Mat
  • 12" x 12" StandardGrip Machine Mat
  • Knife Blade & Housing
  • Cricut EasyPress Mini™, or Household Iron and Press Cloth
  • Weeder
  • Masking Tape
  • Tear-Strip (upcycled from aluminum foil box)
  • Wood or White Glue
  • Paintbrush (for glue)
  • Tacky or Jewelry Glue
  • Washi Tape
  • Wax Paper
  • Clamps or Press

DIRECTIONS:

    Size: Finished tape dispenser is approximately 6" x 3"
  1. To alter the project, use Preview panel to arrange pieces. Ensure pieces are within an 11" x 11" area, oriented to the top left corner of the mat.
  2. For best results, arrange the inside and outside whale shaped pieces with the grain opposite each other for extra strength.
  3. Use masking tape or painter’s tape to secure basswood edges to the StrongGrip mat.
  4. Cut
  5. Place iron-on material, shiny side (clear liner) down, on the StandardGrip mat. Follow Design Space prompts to cut the image.
  6. Follow Design Space prompts. Confirm the correct cut setting and use the Knife Blade for cutting basswood.
  7. Assemble pieces.
  8. Apply the iron-on eyes to the outside whale pieces using a Cricut EasyPress™ and Cricut EasyPress Mat.
  9. Arrange the pieces and familiarize yourself with which ones fit together where.
  10. Brush glue onto the main whale piece, then attach the inside piece to it so the cutouts face each other when both pieces are done. Wipe off any excess glue from the edges.
  11. Place the now double-thick whale pieces between two pieces of wax paper, then clamp or place in a press to dry.
  12. Trim the tear-strip to the width of smaller wood connector piece and center. Glue the tear strip in place with the tacky glue, leaving the sharp edge slightly above the edge of the connector piece.
  13. Glue the reinforcement pieces on either side of the connector piece. Use a clamp or press to secure in place while it dries.
  14. Run a bead down the slots for the connector pieces. Slide the connector pieces into the slots, then press the two sides together. The fit will be snug.
  15. Clean off any excess glue before it dries. Sand if needed.
  16. Assemble the tape cross piece and insert into the tape.
  17. Slide the tape into the tape holder in the rounded slots.
